There are electric scooters and bicycles available to ride all over Kitchener. Yesterday I looked into them only to discover they cost as much as taking an Uber. What is the point? I can’t afford that. Lots of people can’t afford that. And besides, the helmets might be infested with head lice, and no one wants that. @waterlooregion #scooter #transportation #Kitchener

TonyDeals,

@Shanmonster @waterlooregion you're forgetting the degradation of the environment and the negative impact of your Uber trip on surrounding traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists

It's sort of like having a bike when your bike isn't with you. I have scooted hundreds of miles

@waterlooregion @TonyDeals I don’t take Ubers. I walk or ride a bicycle.

peter_downey,

@Shanmonster @waterlooregion Its $0.35 a minute right? Figure you rent a scooter to go to the grocery store (and you can carry your groceries in a backpack or something), 10 minutes each way AND you can unreserve it when you get there. So that's only $7, and you don't have to wait for an uber or worse, a bus. And the price is static, so that same ride won't be $15 during rush hour. Downside if someone grabs your scooter while you're in the store...

peter_downey,

@Shanmonster @waterlooregion Agree about the helmets and pests thing (i'd certainly use my own helmet thanks), but for say uni kids who want to cover that street corner outside their apartment building to the ION, this makes sense. Doing grocery shopping for a family of 5, yeah no one is using these for that.

I would have used the crap out of this in my university days when I didn't have a car and the bus service was -terrible-. Walking for an hour with a week's groceries sucked.

@waterlooregion @peter_downey I would have loved to have had this option to get to Conestoga college when I went there, but it would’ve cost me about $30 or more a day. It’s an hour-long bike ride or a 1.5-2-hour bus ride from where I live.

@waterlooregion @peter_downey if I travel the same rate in one of those scooters as I do on my bicycle, it’s more like $70/day.

@waterlooregion @peter_downey I have to walk about twenty minutes before I find any of those scooters. There are none in my neighbourhood. If they could be left anywhere, and if they didn’t cost so much, I’d consider riding one. I’ve thought about riding one home from yoga, but it’s pointless if I can’t leave it near my house. I also thought it might be nice to ride to Huron Natural area, but thete and back would cost me about $30.

@Shanmonster @waterlooregion @peter_downey FWIW, they offer some discounts for longer rentals. For 3 days (90 minutes per day) it’s $9.42 per day. For 7 days it’s $5.33 per day. But yeah, cost can certainly be a factor…
