I have now completed the nine volume books series The Expanse by James A Corey, and what a ride it has been.

Its quite an extraordinary feat of sustained (coherent) imagination & I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes world-building SF.

With its multi-viewpoint narrative strategy but also with it central core of crucial characters, this is space opera of the highest quality.

And the finale is wonderfully pleasing in plotting terms!

Its been a joy!

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon that's my all-time favorite series! The authors did such a fabulous job creating such a complicated and interwoven story. I loved the characters. I loved everything about it! Did you also read the short stories? They provide a lot more background about some important side characters, especially the two children on Laconia and Filip. I think you can get a collection now with all of them.

Yes, the short stories are my next buy....

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon let us know what you think! The story Strange Dogs was my favorite. Just FYI the audiobooks are also great. I love the books so much I bought the audiobooks too. Back when I commuted to work every day I enjoyed listening to them in the car. The narrator is fabulous.

Yes, the Expanse series is an incredible read - another example that video can never match book-mind-imagination magic. The novellas are excellent too.

The only multi book read with recurring characters to equal it that I have found is Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey - Maturin series. Totally different venue, but a superb series.

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon It's a great set of books. I had stopped reading science fiction but very glad I started again with this series.

This is on my "read-list" having thoroughly enjoyed the TV adaptations (the final series seemed to run out of steam though). I tended to watch them when by myself - my better half couldn't get past the Secretary General of the United Nations saying "f**k" all the time...

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Henrysbridge @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon she is also super sweary in the books but they eventually explain why. There's a reason, and I don't remember if they explained it in the TV show.

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@Jennifer @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon

I don't think it is - at least, not clearly. Maybe a re-watch is needed.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Henrysbridge @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon she's also not a major character in most of the books. She's not in the first one at all.

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@Jennifer @Henrysbridge @bookstodon

I think the person I'm most interested in seeing how they are portrayed is Amos, especially in the final segment.... (won't say more as a plot spoiler)

marcroberts,
@marcroberts@mastodon.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @Jennifer @Henrysbridge @bookstodon Not sure of another way of saying it but I feel that over the course of the whole series Amos suffers some character “drift”... Otherwise it's excellent.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@marcroberts @ChrisMayLA6 @Henrysbridge @bookstodon the actor who plays Amos doesn't look anything like the character I see in my head when I read the books, but he's absolutely perfect. He totally gets Amos. Although the TV series doesn't do the last three books ☹️

marcroberts,
@marcroberts@mastodon.social avatar

@Jennifer @ChrisMayLA6 @Henrysbridge @bookstodon Yeah he's a really great Amos, and I'd have to re-read and re-watch to put a finger on what I mean by "drift" I think, but it doesn't ruin him at all.

@marcroberts @Jennifer @ChrisMayLA6 @Henrysbridge @bookstodon Amos is the most empathetic of all the characters for me. Book or TV show. He and Drummer (TV) are just wonderful and challenging all at once - like so many humans.

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon You've reminded me that I really need to read the final instalment. Which means re-reading the previous 8 because it's been a while!

strathearnrose,
@strathearnrose@mastodon.scot avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon it’s on my list of book series that will be re-read every couple of years

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@strathearnrose @bookstodon

crikey, that's a major time commitment

strathearnrose,
@strathearnrose@mastodon.scot avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @strathearnrose @bookstodon not when it’s a joy!

CatherineFlick,

@ChrisMayLA6 I really enjoyed it too! And I think the series did it justice, even if it didn't follow things quite exactly.

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@CatherineFlick

Yes, I want to wait a little then I thought I'd give the series a go.... although it difficult to imagine how they can really deliver a similar imaginative universe

CatherineFlick,
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 They manage it! And although it makes some choices, they aren't terrible ones in the scheme of things. Like with all TV adaptations it's worthwhile seeing it as an AU but the vision is there and it actually helped me to visualise some of the things that are described in the novels but hard to picture. (e.g. Holden's visions).

CatherineFlick,
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Also Shohreh Aghdashloo is INCREDIBLE.

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@CatherineFlick

Aha, thanks - that encourages me.... now just got to convince my wife that (having not read the books) she might be OK to sit through it all....

CatherineFlick,
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 tbh I started the series not having read the books, binged S1 and 2 and then read all the books. lol

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@CatherineFlick

Ha ha, my niece recommended the TV series, but being a reader more than a watcher, I of course started on the books...

CatherineFlick,
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 And after that you should watch For All Mankind, which I headcanon as the pre-cursor series XD

CatherineFlick,
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 now you're making me want to watch it again! It would feel like getting to see old friends.
