All onboard a night train! 🚆

Rail is one of the most sustainable means of transport we have, but cross-border trips account for just 7% of the kilometres travelled by train.

This is why we are supporting 10 pilot projects to create new international train connections in the EU.

They will help us improve the quality of service and make them a viable option for more people.

trish,

@EU_Commission Where do I find information about the progress of these pilot projects? As the announcement dates from Jan 31, 2023, some progress should have been made.

meesj,

@EU_Commission It was about time... Invest in making traveling by train through the EU more attractive!

aselus,

@EU_Commission reliability is still a problem imho. We took a night train from Amsterdam to Zurich, but on the way back the sleeper cars were missing and everyone was just forced into coach. Not exactly making us want to risk it again in the future, or reassuring us.

@EU_Commission things are far worse over here in North America. I'm excited to be taking the train to and from my fall vacation with my wife and friends but on average, train travel isn't even an option for most people in #Canada, despite being a country built around rail.
Good luck! Keep being an example.

TheDarkFlame,

@EU_Commission are delegates from EU travelling by rail to various events? We should lead by example.

Sarah1312,

@EU_Commission how about actually making companies provide good, useful, and affordable cross border high speed connections?

LAV Perpinyà - Figueres sees only a few trains a day

the ICE from Brussels to Frankfurt is overpriced to shit and the trains on the route are literally falling apart

also many european high speed lines have a tendency to just end at the border, maybe work on that?

how about actually coordinating rail construction and train operation on a European level, even beyond just the TEN-T corridors?

@EU_Commission @geekingirl This is amazing!! 🛤️

janmon,

@EU_Commission Wohooo, so many new connections 🎉

I remember there were plans for a night train connecting Paris and Berlin by the end of 2023. Do you happen to know what happened to that connection?

saitam,

@EU_Commission more trains everywhere. Bring back the old connections, even with old trains, doesn't matter, just make them roll. If one can ride over night, speed doesn't matter.
About 20years ago, we used to have a nigth train connection between Geneva and Dax (West France) which brought us to surfing tripps easily. Bring it back please

hilerioux,

@EU_Commission Nice, but why are cross-boarder flights VAT exempt, but train trips are not?

petr_pilin,

@EU_Commission What about a super fast train connection on a London - Paris - Berlin - Prague - Vienna route? Am I the only one missing the Czech part?

alt_h0me,

@EU_Commission great news

@EU_Commission Can you please brag about this to Americans and otherwise shame us into doing something similar? 😉

@EU_Commission That's awesome news. Having to change trains is painful, especially on international routes, and this will help. One more step toward avoiding air travel, for sure.

Personally, I'm excited about that Venice - Paris option, which can give me a reason to connect in Venice between train and ferry on the way from Greece to France.

pmtriste,

@EU_Commission I can't wait to take the train from Portugal into the rest of Europe!

@EU_Commission Paris - Stuttgart - Munich - Salzburg - Vienna is a connection which still needs more regular "direct" trains - but I am looking forward to more Night trains. Or one day the InterConnect from Lisboa to Madrid to Paris to Brussels to Berlin to Warsaw to Riga (and if the Baltic tunnel is done to Helsinki)

janeckhoff,

@EU_Commission excellent news!
I‘d be interested to know tho why there’s that gap between Hamburg and Amsterdam…

janeckhoff,

@EU_Commission right now, the fastest daytime route involves 4 changes (!) including a bus service (!) to cross the border 😳

Also thinking of @jon ‘s #CrossBorderRail project here 😊

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@janeckhoff The rail bridge at Leer will re-open in 2024. But note these @EU_Commission projects are what the rail firms themselves sent in. I assume no one sent in Hamburg-Amsterdam…

janeckhoff,

@jon @EU_Commission sadly, the line didn’t seem to have had much importance in the last decades before the collision. Well, with the bridge rebuild completed, there will at least be the chance of an improved connection in the future 😄

@janeckhoff @EU_Commission a little. Netherlands still needs to electrify the line. And Germany improve speed and capacity between Leer and Oldenburg.

janeckhoff,

@EU_Commission @jon ah, here‘s one good reason: the #Friesenbrücke was damaged in 2015 and is being rebuilt until next year.

Here‘s hoping this will lead to better connections between #Bremen and #Groningen, and thus between #Hamburg and #Amsterdam.

@janeckhoff @EU_Commission yes. I was there in May. Photos of the ongoing works from the drone here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/jonworth-eu/FC92ANN4U1

@EU_Commission Rubbish, trains need to run frequently on all levels (local, regional, national and international).

Just focussing on trains between a handful of big cities is not going to help. 🥴

@EU_Commission Connecting WHICH Europe? The central, same-as-always Europe?
More-than-neighbours Galicia & northern Portugal have been waiting for a proper train connection for over half a century (to say the least!) People north and south of the Minho river have learnt to expect nothing with this regard.

mary,

@EU_Commission a night train between Hamburg and Oslo would be amazing 🤩
