@BlackenedGreen@umrk some people do it twice or MULTIPLE times, but I generally stick to the once. I should maybe get a tofu press but I also have these HANDS at the ends of my arms that have worked pretty well for that so far.
@umrk Everybody’s situation is different. But maybe try to remember why you went vegetarian in the first place? 12 years is a long time, and something to be very proud of.
Is there some other comfort food that might do the trick? Or a good substitute - some of those meat-alternative burgers are hard to tell apart from the real thing now, especially if you get them in a good burger restaurant with a whole bunch of tasty toppings and sauces inside the burger.
I find seitan (you can get it pre made in cans labelled "mock chicken" or "mock duck" from Asian supermarkets) has great bite, too.
@sarajw@umrk ditto on all this. We have an air fryer and I seriously freeze tofu once, let defrost (chews more like real meat), squeeze & break up, olive oil & season and throw in there. & when done buffalo sauce sometimes with some celery/carrots- I call it buffalofu 🤣
@sarajw@umrk I'm eating some now actually. It's fast and easy. I'm sure regular oven same thing, I still use that plenty haha (did Mexican pizzas with tostadas last night in it) - we do some refried beans too. And quinoa etc. Are you ovo lacto etc too, some egg, definitely some cheese here.
@wendigo@umrk@sarajw uh.. guilty. I have like, multiple types of cheese in my fridge at any given time. Currently cheddar, mozz, colby, monterey jack, muenster, parmesan. It's bonkers hahaha
@wendigo@umrk@sarajw I LOVE feta but I never buy it because it infuriates me at how quickly it goes bad. It ALWAYS goes bad before I can use it. I just gave up. hahaha
@umrk heck yeah, dude. Anytime. Yeah, cutting back is a start. For anything. I used to drink 6 cups of coffee a day and a pack of cigarettes, man. I get it haha. It took me YEARS to cut back and then quit. Cigs took so many years of trying.
Suppose it’s not a specific craving. Probably more of a self-destructive thing. Been off caffeine for 6 days now, too. I might just go get a veggie burger, and tell my stupid brain it’s meat.
@umrk@sarajw oh wow yeah veggie burger! Haha. So many good options now - in the 90s veggie burgers SUCKED 🤣 my folks were veggie on and off. Dad heart/cholesterol issues. Can't believe they're even at Burger King now. And those are decent. Still, need more options. Caffeine by choice or no? I reduced massively but may still have a cup or two a day
@umrk yeah that makes sense if it's a stress thing, wanting to blow off some steam by doing something "bad".
I mean - if you need to, you need to. But I don't know how hard you'd kick yourself for it after? Probably better to sneak some bacon or espresso than fall off the sobriety wagon though (also, kudos for that)?
Yeah. Thanks.
And thanks for talking me through it. I might spiral again, but…going to go for a walk. See if that helps, too. (I mean, I know I should do that anyway.)
@umrk I mean, I am I eat mostly veg, my wife is full veg. And I cook. So the only non-veg stuff I do is the stuff that's just for me, and that's pretty rare, as I don't like making multiple meals hahaha. But yeah.. veg is such a good way to go. You get sick less, better for the planet (if you care about that kind of thing) - I'm mostly off beef/pork. And I do VERY little chicken, fish and turkey. Plus meat has gotten EXPENSIVE haha. I know the veg options can be too. But I think it's kinda worth it.
