Any ex-vegetarians out there. I haven’t eaten meat for about 12 years, and I’m teetering.

@umrk sometimes a make a fake out bacon with tempeh and smoked paprika or Cajun spice that works pretty good as a sort of Cubano sandwich

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@BlackenedGreen @umrk damn, that's a sick idea. Yeah fake bacon RULES. Like, better than the real thing now. Wild

BlackenedGreen,
@BlackenedGreen@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 @umrk yeah man, a big fat, tempeh lettuce tomato with avocado and veganaise is my jam

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@BlackenedGreen @umrk ohhh snap and the veganaise

BlackenedGreen,
@BlackenedGreen@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 @umrk your tip about freezing tofu is legit too

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@BlackenedGreen @umrk some people do it twice or MULTIPLE times, but I generally stick to the once. I should maybe get a tofu press but I also have these HANDS at the ends of my arms that have worked pretty well for that so far.

@umrk Everybody’s situation is different. But maybe try to remember why you went vegetarian in the first place? 12 years is a long time, and something to be very proud of.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@umrk I'm not an ex vegetarian but I'm a guilty omnivore. What's making you teeter?

umrk,
@umrk@metalhead.club avatar

@sarajw

Just some big life stress. Still sober though, so I’ve got that goin’ for me.

sarajw, (edited )
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@umrk I can understand that.

Is there some other comfort food that might do the trick? Or a good substitute - some of those meat-alternative burgers are hard to tell apart from the real thing now, especially if you get them in a good burger restaurant with a whole bunch of tasty toppings and sauces inside the burger.

I find seitan (you can get it pre made in cans labelled "mock chicken" or "mock duck" from Asian supermarkets) has great bite, too.

Depends what thing you're craving...

@jake4480@c.im avatar

@sarajw @umrk ditto on all this. We have an air fryer and I seriously freeze tofu once, let defrost (chews more like real meat), squeeze & break up, olive oil & season and throw in there. & when done buffalo sauce sometimes with some celery/carrots- I call it buffalofu 🤣

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@jake4480 @umrk oh interesting tip on the tofu!

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@sarajw @umrk I'm eating some now actually. It's fast and easy. I'm sure regular oven same thing, I still use that plenty haha (did Mexican pizzas with tostadas last night in it) - we do some refried beans too. And quinoa etc. Are you ovo lacto etc too, some egg, definitely some cheese here.

umrk,
@umrk@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 @sarajw

Just crisis mode, I guess. Have wanted to go vegan, but haven’t been able to ditch cheese.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@umrk @sarajw ditching cheese, I can't imagine. Just brutal haha. I could ditch a lot but yeah, I'd struggle with cheese.

wendigo,
@wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 @umrk @sarajw I literally eat cheese every day. I can't get enough of New York or Vermont extra sharp cheddar... ;>)

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo @umrk @sarajw uh.. guilty. I have like, multiple types of cheese in my fridge at any given time. Currently cheddar, mozz, colby, monterey jack, muenster, parmesan. It's bonkers hahaha

wendigo,
@wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 @umrk @sarajw Yeah, I can tear up some Jack and Muenster, too. Parm Reg as well...

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo @umrk @sarajw I LOVE feta but I never buy it because it infuriates me at how quickly it goes bad. It ALWAYS goes bad before I can use it. I just gave up. hahaha

wendigo,
@wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 @umrk @sarajw Love Feta! I've never had a problem with it going bad, but I don't buy it often or in large amounts.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo @umrk @sarajw my inlaws are Persian so of course feta is like, one of their major food groups. They literally ALWAYS have it. 😂

umrk,
@umrk@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480

Maybe some day. Cutting back is a good start.

Thanks for helping to clear the fog, Jake. 👊

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@umrk heck yeah, dude. Anytime. Yeah, cutting back is a start. For anything. I used to drink 6 cups of coffee a day and a pack of cigarettes, man. I get it haha. It took me YEARS to cut back and then quit. Cigs took so many years of trying.

umrk,
@umrk@metalhead.club avatar

@sarajw

Suppose it’s not a specific craving. Probably more of a self-destructive thing. Been off caffeine for 6 days now, too. I might just go get a veggie burger, and tell my stupid brain it’s meat.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@umrk @sarajw oh wow yeah veggie burger! Haha. So many good options now - in the 90s veggie burgers SUCKED 🤣 my folks were veggie on and off. Dad heart/cholesterol issues. Can't believe they're even at Burger King now. And those are decent. Still, need more options. Caffeine by choice or no? I reduced massively but may still have a cup or two a day

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@umrk yeah that makes sense if it's a stress thing, wanting to blow off some steam by doing something "bad".

I mean - if you need to, you need to. But I don't know how hard you'd kick yourself for it after? Probably better to sneak some bacon or espresso than fall off the sobriety wagon though (also, kudos for that)?

umrk,
@umrk@metalhead.club avatar

@sarajw

Yeah. Thanks.
And thanks for talking me through it. I might spiral again, but…going to go for a walk. See if that helps, too. (I mean, I know I should do that anyway.)

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@umrk any time. Sometimes it just helps to get the thoughts out into the open - as well as your body, haha. Have a nice walk 🍃

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@umrk I mean, I am I eat mostly veg, my wife is full veg. And I cook. So the only non-veg stuff I do is the stuff that's just for me, and that's pretty rare, as I don't like making multiple meals hahaha. But yeah.. veg is such a good way to go. You get sick less, better for the planet (if you care about that kind of thing) - I'm mostly off beef/pork. And I do VERY little chicken, fish and turkey. Plus meat has gotten EXPENSIVE haha. I know the veg options can be too. But I think it's kinda worth it.
