A small #CrossBorderRail linguistic observation - I was initially confused by the Polish signage for both 'platform' and 'track' numbers.
Most platforms have 2 tracks !

The British don't distinguish between the two, the Dutch consistently use 'spoor' which is a track - but never talk about platforms.

What can I expect in Italy / Switzerland next week?

(I'm trying to recall what the French do)

@steely_glint Hello there! Italian railway-enthusiast traveler here.

In #Italy we number the railtracks (𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰) as someone already mentioned, but the PA announcer translation may be confusing because - in the English version - they translate "binario" as "platform", which is obviously not exactly the same thing. #train #railway

@steely_glint I remember the times when we had the platform+track combination in Austria as well but that's long ago.
From my memories of Swiss and Italian stations, I think I've also seen only tracks there in the last many years.

@steely_glint Track numbers are what you will encounter in those countries.

Note that Italian stations often have some tracks terminating at the station, at one or both ends, and these can have overlapping numbers with through tracks, but with a compass direction appended (sud, est, nord, ovest), or tronco (for truncated), or some other madness. Read displays and signage carefully.

Picture: Franzensfeste/Fortezza station where one track is simply known as the binario tronco, truncated track.

@tml Well at least the Polish situation is reasonably understandable - although it did confuse me for a few mins, fortunately I had enough time to spare. It wasn't helped by the fact that this particular station is in the midst of a rebuild - with temporary signage for old/new/closed platforms and no working info boards on the concourse.
