james,

Internet, do ink tank based #inkjet #printers suffer from the same problems that cartridge based inkjet printers have? I.e they dry out and then waste half a cart cleaning themselves?

I assume the ink isn't DRM protected and I can use 3rd party ink just fine?

I need a new printer, and also want to experiment with dye-sublimation printing, but don't want a printer that won't work half the time.

rc2014,

@james
I can't answer your question about ink tank printers. However, I read up a lot on dye sublimation printers recently, and one of the takeaways I got from that is that you cannot swap about between regular ink and dye-sub ink. You essentially need to dedicate your printer to dye-sub.

I got an Epson WF-2010W for dye-sub use. This really is a cheap crappy printer, although with the conversion kit it becomes an expensive crappy printer. But for the amount of usage it'll get, I can live with that.

james,

@rc2014 hmm interesting. Does it dry up if you don't use it for a while, or does having separate ink tanks make it easier to clean if it does get itself in a mess?

rc2014,

@james
I don't know yet. Only had it for a couple of months and it's probably been unused for about 2 weeks at most.

Mine is a regular ink cartridge type (with refillable cartridges) not ink tank.
