Outrageous. “Duke University announced it is ending a full-ride scholarship program for Black students”

Duke admits 11% of the general applicants but 23% of legacy applicants—whose parents and grandparents parents were accepted during Jim Crow.

Duke didn’t even accept Black students until 1963. Now Black scholarships are banned but racist Jim Crow Legacy thrives.

This is America. https://t.co/dNK2Rst99y

@QasimRashid is this one of the colleges the slaves built? If so any black person should always go for free.... reparations NOW!

@QasimRashid I'd say one of the better ways to address this would be to eliminate legacy applications. Anonymize the application process. Let's get rid of all these types of nonsense biases.

@QasimRashid I have zero investment in Duke—& support having such scholarship programs 100%.

But would you feel better if Duke was sued, took the case to SCOTUS, lost, and then had to kill this program as a result? Many entities have had to close or restructure programs b/c of recent SCOTUS decisions. Come on, you know that.

Also: Jim Crow legally ended decades ago. The legacy kids going to Duke? Their parents were born in the 1970s. They’re Gen-Xers, not the Jim Crow gen.

@SaschaFreud @QasimRashid You have a lot to learn about how generational wealth works.

SaschaFreud,
@SaschaFreud@mas.to avatar

@integerpoet @QasimRashid Uh, no, I understand it. And if Qasim's point is that all inherited wealth is bad, then he should have said that. Likewise if he believes that all inherited wealth in the US derives from Jim Crow, no matter how attenuated. I don't know that I'd agree w/it, but it's a valid argument to be made.

But that's not what the post says.

You seem to assume that all legacy admissions are wealthy. That is also an unfounded assumption.

@SaschaFreud @QasimRashid Like I said, you have a lot to learn about how generational wealth works.

SaschaFreud,
@SaschaFreud@mas.to avatar

@integerpoet @QasimRashid I am so, so impressed by your sophisticated argument! Gosh, I better just fold now and concede the point!

The particular irony of your anti-intellectual sloganeering response is that Qasim is a smart guy for whom I have a lot of respect. And I have no doubt that even if he disagreed with me he’d offer an actual argument instead of that nonsense you provided.

QasimRashid,
@QasimRashid@mastodon.social avatar

@SaschaFreud @integerpoet Legacy includes parents and grandparents. The chain is often unbroken. It's partly generational wealth for which reparations were never paid, and it's also partly ensuring legacy students have a 6-7X likelihood of getting admission than non-legacy students

Black & brown students have a tiny chance of getting legacy admission, where as in many top schools, e.g. Harvard, 43% of white students are legacy & 75% of them would NOT have qualified on merit. That's unacceptable

@QasimRashid They just went back to the days when Blacks had to go to school across town at North Carolina Central University. Or at Fayetteville State. The HBCU'S.

1953 all over again.

@QasimRashid

The administrators at Duke are either 1) cowards or 2) racists. If a university doesn't have the balls to make the moral decision, I would suggest that they are unworthy to provide education. I would never attend, nor send my children to an institution of higher learning that is so clearly bereft of ethics. The fact that they advertise themselves as a "Christian" institution is laughable, but 100% on message for today's evangelical fascists.
