But what do those who use #Autodesk applications do with their files when they stop renewing their subscription?
Do they save in other formats such as USD ABC or how else can they access their files? #Maya #3dsMax

@pafurijaz Back in 2012, when I stopped using 3ds Max and jumped onto Blender because of Autodesk's subscription move, I exported a lot of my scenes as OBJ, but you lose a lot of flexibility, because the .max format includes modifiers, a reference to the renderer used, materials, etcetera.

In the end I've rarely needed to use the exported files. Some scenes I decided to recreate in Blender, to get the flexibility back for clients.

@metin It was a long time ago there weren't many alternatives, modifiers are a problem like many internal application tools.
maybe things are a little better now.
however the latest perpetual license was 3ds Max 2022

@pafurijaz Yes, but I used to buy upgrades, and Autodesk started to push subscriptions after Max 2012, and an upgrade of the perpetual license became more expensive than the subscription, so that marked the moment for me to move to Blender, also because I wanted to switch to a Mac.

These days I've got a Windows PC again, because in 2019 Apple decided to cease support for OpenGL, OpenCL and NVIDIA, in favor of their Metal graphics library. So a Windows PC became better for 3D applications.
