There's—rightly—a lot of attention to trying to physically protect people from the smoke, but there's a very strong psychological effect as well that seems…much less attended to, especially when it lasts for more than a few days. The primal danger signals inherent in light like that + the climate doom feelings is just a lot.
@JamesGleick you can totally tell these east coast pussies are totally not used to wildfires. What are you scared?? Welcome to what it's like to live in Our World bitches. You pussies could NEVER SURVIVE
@JamesGleick On the west coast, we've been experiencing this every summer for ~20 years now. It is interesting how much it is in the news this year now that it has hit the east coast.
@JamesGleick that is a beautiful picture of a horrible reality. Be safe and best wishes to you and your loved ones! (From Seattle. We had this not so long ago. Bleh.)
@JamesGleick Wow! That is bad. The smoke reached us in northwest VA today. I was at a meeting in town earlier this evening, and driving home it was like a light fog. I will have to get out my masks for the weekend to fend off the particulates.
@JamesGleick for anyone dealing with smoke season for the first time, or anyone who would just like some more resources, some Seattle folks threw together some resources in 2019.
