There are some software that we need to preserve, meaning both keeping them under development and also keep them as community-driven projects.

I'll list here the projects I think that should be preserved, and I invite you all to comment the projects you think are essential to be on the list (please provide URL as well)

My list for now:
@AntennaPod
@kde applications
• Emacs
@neovim
@joplinapp

🔂 Boosting is highly appreciated

I'd say

...and many others could be listed as well! Am I mistaken btw? Is there a title here that's not a community driven project?

@heikkiket
Thanks for your list, although, Gnome and LibreOffice are corporate-backed (hence Linux is not in my list), meld and Gimp are Gnome project.

Yes, lots of projects can be listed, but because of limited character count on mastodon I thought it would already limit the list. 😉

heikkiket,

@Mehrad
However, Meld and Gimp don't get any corporate backing. Especially for libre graphics it would be very vital to have someone sponsoring Gimp (as well as Krita etc).

Meld has only one hobbyist maintainer as far as I know.

@heikkiket
Thanks for the explanation. They then perfectly fit my criteria as well 🤓

What is the logic behind considering any app in such a list? I can understand why vim should be preserved and remain community derriven but why neovim?

@ahangarha
That is my list, you can list your own 🤗

My logic is that Neovim solved one the most inherent problems with Vim: VimScript.

@Mehrad
I know. But more than a list of projects, I think it is useful to create a criteria for the priority software to be preserved. At least I am more interested in knowing such a criteria. It also helps for convincing people to donate to such a list because there are clear and supposedly good reasons behind the list.

@ahangarha
The projects I'm after shouldn't be backed by corporates (e.g Linux is off the list). It should be something that doesn't have a very good drop-in FLOSS replacement (hence neovim, emacs, AntennaPod). They should also be something that plays a very important role in daily life/job.

Do you have anything to suggest?

@Mehrad
Good criteria. Just not sure why Linux (kernel) should be excluded. I think anything related to OS is a good candidate based on the criteria you listed. Anything enabler tool for free computation that its existence is critical, must be preserved and maintained independently.

@ahangarha
Because regardless of what I want, things like Linux will be preserved. When something is backed by corporates, it is operation critical for them and they are invested to keep it stable. In contrast, no big corporate is backing AntennaPod or Joplin or Neovim, but these are FLOSS things people use daily to improve their quality of life, hence need preserving imho.

vim and gvim insted of neovim - this one is particularly at risk since Bram Moolenaar passed away this year.
