johnbeers,

My awesome wife got me two books by @wsvincent for Christmas!

johnbeers,

One of the things I really appreciate about "Django for Beginners" is the introduction of writing tests fairly early in the book. While I'm aware of the importance, boot camp didn't teach testing, and I never took the time to delve into the subject properly.

johnbeers,

Continuing on with "Django for Beginners", I realize that my previous attempts at building things with Django has been me basically forcing the Flask-oriented approach I learned in boot camp rather than utilizing its built-in goodness, like user authentication.

johnbeers,

To be fair, I opted to learn a new framework while simultaneously using said framework to build my final project. Yes, it worked, but obviously didn't use best practices. I actually enjoy the fact that, with software development, there's always more to learn and expand upon.

@johnbeers I hope you enjoy the books! Most bootcamps seem to favor Flask it seems. It's really only the second/third framework or even programming language for that matter where the larger concepts come together. That said, for regular old web apps, Django is hard to beat!

johnbeers,

@wsvincent Definitely enjoying the books so far! I'll probably pick up the third at some point as well.

johnbeers,

@wsvincent After going through the first book, I wrote a contact management app using what I learned. I have some other ideas to work on next, including rewriting my final boot camp project, before I jump into the next one.

@johnbeers very cool project! That's a great use case and an example of how everything is just CRUD + auth. I've been thinking about adding a few recipe-like examples of this at the end of the Beginners book since it's easy to say but until you try to build something on your own, it's not fully clear how similar all web apps are.

johnbeers,

After working on a contact management app with Django, I started my next little project. This one is a to do list with a twist: it's going to use the Eisenhower Matrix for time management.

johnbeers,

Successfully deployed my latest app which helps you to manage and prioritize your to-do list using the Eisenhower Matrix!
