til that does not enable hardware encoding by default. Have to put hwdec=auto-safe in .config/mpv/mpv.conf

did a rough estimate for power savings if every mpv user enabled hardware decoding, and it's around the same energy use of 3000 homes

(assuming 1 hour of mpv use per day, that 7% of desktop linux users use it regularly (per debian popcon), and that my laptop's ~3 watt power save is representative. I used 30 million as the linux desktop user guesstimate)

@joeyh I don't mean this as a rhetorical question: do you have a clear idea of the benefit of leaving the packaged default for that setting as being off? Does it improve compatibility or increase the chances of first-use success or something?

@gnomon @joeyh GPU drivers are notoriously unstable doing just OpenGL, adding VA-API to the mix that doesn't get better.

@juliank @joeyh still?? Ah phooey. Thank you for that info. I spend most of my computer time in Debian but for the last 3-4 years almost exclusively in the terminal via SSH, so I'm not at all up to date on the current state of the GPU driver user experience. Thank you for filling me in.
