@o76923 mfm functions need content, perhaps it could look like this:

$[pfp @julia@eepy.moe]

That way it'd also have a reasonable fallback on akkoma and mastodon.

Can the parser handle the periods and at signs that have semantic meaning instead of just being arbitrary text?

Keeps the meaning as parameters but has content. I'd suggest that it be the fallback if the PFP can't be loaded for whatever reason.
