Many people do take the effort to set that all up but don’t wanna change default passwords cause it’s ’too much trouble’ :blobcatgiggle:

When I first tried to explain the dangers of electronic voting to my best friend and he laughed it off, that's when I went "oh my God you don't know anything about computers do you"

@DavidMHarlan @stux Our state at least just has counting machines to read the filled in bubbles on paper ballots. If there's something wrong, they can go back and have a person count the paper ballots

    I've been harping on how dangerous electronic voting can be ever since Georgia was among the first states to buy them in 2001. They say it's about speed and getting results faster but when did elections become a horse race? They've sacrificed the sanctity of our elections because somebody decided they couldn't wait two days for results. And not only are they less secure, they're also VERY expensive when compared to good ol' paper ballots. Follow the $$!

    @stux and #Ring as well as #nest products openly violate #GDPR and snitch on people against their consent.

    my biggest worry about these horrible gadgets from hell is that landlords could start forcing them on tenants,

    especially given that judges are often clueless about the implications.

    kkarhan,

    @quincy @stux I'm glad such shit is illegal here as & really are strict re: and that just using some "as-a-Service" solution by some just doesn't fly.

    Espechally surveillance and privacy of homes is a strict topic to the point that it's illegal to have a serialized key system that could allow landlords and their stuff to non-consensually enter someones' condo.

    But that's quite specific to and certainly not applying to the !!

    kkarhan,

    @stux true. true...

    Do you know how many times all I needed was just look up the #DefaultLogins to get into something?

    It's really frustrating.

    Tho feel free to submit some to this list.

    I'm not saying smart locks are good, but mechanical locks aren't much better, every lock is pickable, they'll just slow someone down if they really want to get in

    Though that being said, smart locks have mechanical backup, so they're the worst of both worlds

    @stux it's funny I realized I'm kinda both that person that actually has always had everything analog at home and their own servers for avoiding third party dependencies.... as well as now dogfooding the latest Google stuff as employee, with full telemetry and debugging set up on my corp phone as such, so I guess that puts me on both ends of that spectrum nowadays? 🤔

    isisevrinen,

    @stux Het grootste probleem met al die 'slimme' meuk vind ik toch wel dat je lampen het niet doen als Google een storing heeft. Net als auto's waarbij alles elektrisch is. Dan kan je niet eens meer de ramen open doen als de accu leeg is.

    @stux @Jain there's a reason why I refuse to sell, deliver or service printers...

    Because Lazer just works to the point that I've yet to see any issues with Xerox devices...

    @Jain @stux I had a rude awakening the other day when I discovered that most new printers won't work unless you connect them to wifi. I will be keeping my old USB-only printer going for as long as I can. Epson (of course) has stopped selling the ink cartridges for it to force the consumer to update but I found a small business that makes compatible cartridges and have all appendages crossed that they never go out of business. I also got rid of my Fitbit when Google bought them out.

    IAmDannyBoling,
    @IAmDannyBoling@mstdn.social avatar

    @isotope239

    As of right now, printers made by Brother (especially) and by Canon seem to be the favorites. Neither require an internet connection.

    And never NEVER BUY AN HP PRINTER! The company has some of the most rigid rules about using their printers, including requiring internet. They will brick your printer if you break their rules!

    Just say NO to HP!

    I did a big long thing about this here:

    It's telling that HP has a page set up mostly targeted toward corporate & small business customers specifically to list their "not HP+" printers: https://www.hp.com/us-en/printers/hp-plus/standard.html

    As pointed out elsewhere in this thread, they are the model numbers without an "e" at the end.

    IAmDannyBoling,
    @IAmDannyBoling@mstdn.social avatar

    @Frances_Larina

    I wasn't aware of this. You're right, this IS very telling. They know their customers aren't happy with their direction. I hope they're listening.

    I would hope no IT department would put up with a printer that requires internet access and the requisite firewall holes and network access from outside just so that people on the local LAN could print a document.

    Now all we have to do is get non-corporate customers to insist on the same level of data security.

    kkarhan,

    @IAmDannyBoling @isotope239 @Jain @stux Yeah their new ones are absolute trash.

    I only have a Deskjet 6122 because ot refuses to die...
