@anneapplebaum that’s a bad comparison. The violent reaction is expected after everything Israel has done to the Palestinian people. This isn’t their 9/11, it’s more like their SOBIBOR UPRISING, and Israel is the baddies.
“What on earth was the little force hoping to achieve? And why would the big force show restraint?”
The goal of the little force is to provoke the big force into an over-reaction. Because it makes sympathizers active, and turns bystanders into sympathizers.
Great explainer video from Beau of The Fifth Column, on Israel/Palestine, and what we can learn from past insurgency movements about the most effective tactic for each side.
@anneapplebaum Unfortunately, they have the same type of too-clever-by-half and corrupt leadership that imagines themselves as brilliant strategists when they’re actually just dumb, cruel, cynical, right wing sociopaths incapable of seeing that their grand schemes are monumentally stupid.
Those that characterize this as "Israel's 9/11" are failing to consider the treatment and degradation of Palestinian Muslims for the last 70+yrs... And the loss of anything they can call a home.
As usual, when you look at the bigger middle east picture over decades (centuries?), there's much more to the story than what's happening "today".
@anneapplebaum But it has and it won't stop. Predictable: if Hamas's ineffectual shooting of a few rockets into Israel previously brought death and destruction to Palestinians in Gaza, how much more of a massacre was this going to be in response to a more devastating (and unforgivable) incursion.
