If you blow on a dandelion seed head in just the right way, you get to meet one of these cuties. Nice.

Quick question, does everyone refer to these as dandelion clocks? Not sure if it's a geographical thing, or age related...

aronow,
@aronow@hachyderm.io avatar

@eclectech you know, I don’t think I HAVE a name for them, but I know if you blow on them you get a wish (and more weeds)!

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@aronow Oooh, we didn't get a wish, but the number of blows it took to clear all the seeds away was meant to tell you the time. I like that there are different stories about them!

mrsbeanbag,
@mrsbeanbag@ieji.de avatar

@eclectech @aronow yeah it was never very accurate though somehow and you could sometimes get a stubborn one that took more than 24 blows.

also did you call the seeds "fairies"?

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@mrsbeanbag @aronow Oh yes, when they are flying about, always fairies. I had forgotten that.

@Dtl Oh that is very pleasing!

Edit: Did it get the time right?!

Dtl,
@Dtl@mastodon.social avatar

@eclectech it told me it was time to go home. I was on my way home, so yes.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@Dtl Ahh, the dandelions are wise.

LaimesKudikis,
@LaimesKudikis@mastodon.social avatar

@eclectech no idea what dandelion clock is (Lithuania) 🤷

We call them fluffs, blow on them for good luck/wish, use to make wreath (when they're in earlier stages) :D

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@LaimesKudikis Oh fluffs is a very good name. Someone else mentioned making a wish too.

We would blow on them, and count how many blows it took for all the seeds to go, and that was the time!

I don't think we ever made wreaths from dandelions, but we did make daisy chains.

LaimesKudikis,
@LaimesKudikis@mastodon.social avatar

@eclectech dandelions were my favorite as a young child. My mom knitted me a yellow dress, and there was a picture of me, the happiest child, in a meadow full of yellow dandelions - me one of them 😂

Making wreaths from them is very common here.

Was the blow to know the time accurate? :) Would it work to tell the parents, if one was late for dinner?

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@LaimesKudikis Oh that is so sweet! Also, that wreath is amazing!

I don't ever recall being reprimanded for being late as a result, but I suspect I was suspicious of its accuracy even at a young age 😆

Satori,
@Satori@mastodon.thirring.org avatar

@eclectech We’ve never heard this expression before! I know them as “windy puffs” in Canada here 😊

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@Satori Oh my, windy puffs is fantastic!

alexisbushnell,
@alexisbushnell@toot.wales avatar

@eclectech yes! Raised in Cheshire, England, in case that helps.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@alexisbushnell Thank you! Yes, I definitely should have done a more nuanced poll. Based on chats so far it seems very UK based.

Drarok,
@Drarok@mastodon.social avatar

@eclectech I’ve never heard the term, perhaps it’s regional? I’m in the UK, mainly lived in the midlands and Oxford areas… dunno where you are, but plausible?

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@Drarok ooh, it's getting complicated now, as we definitely have some examples of people from the midlands using it (we are talking very small sample mind you, and there will be generational impact on it). I might have to try and narrow it down with a more nuanced poll next time I post a dandelion pic!

Getting some great alternative names though; Fluffs and Windy Puffs 😍

RichelleTrickel,
@RichelleTrickel@twit.social avatar

@eclectech I just recently learned that some people call them clocks. We always just called them dandelions no matter their state or sometimes dandelions heads.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@RichelleTrickel Yep, I think the little voice in my head that said "people might not know what you're talking about" was wise.

morph,
@morph@morphnet.de avatar

@eclectech Why "clock" ? 🤔

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@morph You would blow on it, and the number of times it took to blow away all the seeds was the time!

I fear it was not a hugely reliable method of timekeeping.

morph,
@morph@morphnet.de avatar

@eclectech Ah ok. Honestly I don't remember if there were rules like this. I just blew them around a lot and liked to put cuttings of the stems into a glass of water to watch them building spirals.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@morph I'm wondering if it's very geographically targeted. I'm glad in the original post I edited my original "blow on a dandelion clock" to seed head, as I would definitely have made even less sense than normal to quite a few people.

morph,
@morph@morphnet.de avatar

@eclectech Not every dandelion variety works well a clock I'd guess. So that might be the reason why the fact is unknown in some regions.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@morph That's an interesting point, if some varieties are easier to disperse it would always be 1 o'clock, and what use is that?!
