Spendrill, in Oregon governor signs bill criminalizing drug possession

Fucking scumbag. People passed a harm reduction measure and corporate interests scrambled to reintroduce the penalty as quickly as they could.

RHSJack,

I know you are angry. The headline is sheer click bait and trauma theater. Read a little into what is the ACTUAL legislation, you will see it is, while not good, a slightly better alternative to what was submitted. WHich that was a joke and had no chance anyway. At least with this, people in need will have something. Also x2, I am for decriminalization but the way it was introduced first was a dumb hippy fantasy.

Spendrill,

A dumb hippy fantasy… like universal healthcare.

RHSJack,

UHC is a literal, undeniable human right. However, in America, the abstract concept is ruled by politics. And everything the Demos have done is capitulate to the Reds because their own ideas are exactly that: dumb hippy fantasies. Like everything else they propose. My country is ruled by half wits and imcompetence. We’re #1!

Zachariah, in Douglas fir die-off in Southern Oregon gives a glimpse into the future of West Coast forests
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

… combination of above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation is stressing out Douglas fir trees. Bennett suspects these conditions are messing with trees’ ability to pull water up from their roots.

Crackhappy, in The Moon is a mystery
@Crackhappy@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been listening to The Moon using the link I posted. I’m realizing that this link has ads. The broadcast locally here does not have ads. I’ll assume it’s part of being in that internet broadcast system that they’re forced to have ads.

CarbonatedPastaSauce, in Attack on starbucks (Eugene)

People who do shit like this just like to break stuff. This guy in particular broke a window and threw some paint and now he thinks he’s special forces I guess.

That’s because Oregon is just an awful state and no one should ever move here. Just… go elsewhere. Please.

Oh thank fuck

skeezix, in OR reps vote for and against bill to withhold funds from unis if they allow "anti-semitic" speech on campus. Bill faced bipartisan criticism as a restriction on free speech

The amazing thing about “free speech” as a concept in the US is that it refers to speech you agree with, any other speech is game for being banned.

Won’t police just “plant” drugs in people’s cars and houses as an excuse to arrest them? Police do all sorts of shady shit. The less police are involved, the better.

AnalogyAddict, in 🇺🇲 Primary elections are coming up soon, you need to be registered by May 1 🇺🇲

Yes! Then you can vote for the lesser of eight evils!

If, that is, you can figure out which one is the least evil. Good luck!

kescusay, in Kotek threatens to veto money for certain cities
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

She’s absolutely right. There has to be money for housing. We can’t let it all go to projects that only benefit the already-privileged, and getting unhoused people safely off the streets and into some form of housing is good for everyone.

ronalicious, in Oregon governor signs bill criminalizing drug possession

I’m in Portland, and while we voted for this our local government did not provide the requisite opportunities for care and treatment. The rollback of this bill reintroduces facilities for care and treatment.

Not going to get into what is right or wrong, but please understand that this first attempt was implemented poorly and needed to be adjusted in some manner.

Anticorp,

Why not just reintroduce the facilities for care and treatment without the crime attachment?

but Republicans and Democrats are different not the same

or is this going to somehow be spun around to be the Republicans fault and made into a campaign promise asking for funds
