I've been daily driving @opensuse Tumbleweed for a few weeks now.

And it is the best rolling release distro I've ever used.

So, here are the things I found most interesting about it:

Haijo7,

@thelinuxEXP have you ever tried using debian testing? It's my daily driver, and despite the name it appears to be very stable.

@Haijo7 I haven’t! I only used Stable :)

mkras,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse amazing distro! I have been using it for more than a decade and was to reinstall it only once. After I got a new laptop! :)

@thelinuxEXP I switched from Fedora to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed half a year ago. That was some kind of "back to the origins" as OpenSUSE was one of the two distros I discovered back in the days with Mandriva.
I really appreciate the stability and tooling given by OpenSUSE. One thing to mention too is its very strong community: answers on their forum usually come very fast :)

I also migrated half of my server VMs to openSUSE, it works great on server-side too.

it's my daily driver along with Windows (for development purposes, not to "play Destiny 2" hehe), and I see no reason to move away from it.

calciume,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse What a coincidence I've been looking at Tumbleweed in a VM the past couple days. Time to watch the video

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse Just tested it, the installer even allowed me not to install a bootloader. I'm impressed. In 30 min, with #stow, I was back in business, all my apps were there and running. (Even with an #nvidia card) Good job @opensuse

killed2,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse
Thanks for the reminder to check out opensuse. Right after your video I installed tumbleweed plasma on my main PC and I'm pleasantly surprised. Funny thing, suse was the first Linux distribution I ever used back in school around 20 years ago.

mrscientific,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse
Yeah I also tried Opensuse on a VM recently, but was turned off when the default settings didn't get me a bootable system.

I also recall attempting to daily drive it once (a while ago) but found the security settings to be much more stricter than what I'm used to. I ended up switching since that and it just felt like I needed to tweak a bunch of settings to get it to work my way. I'm sure its great for most people though.

Nice to see the gecko getting some love. FWIW, there's a new web-based installer currently being developed with a much sleeker and modern interface. No idea when it'll be ready though

ricol03,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed with the desktop environment on my main machine a couple of days ago, due to some people recommending it to me on a post I made. It has been a pretty amazing experience so far, specially since I started out with and was used to reinstall my system a few times a year. Even on my machine, that is supposed to run Windows, it has been working very well, battery life is a little better than Arch or other distros, and a few bugs it had with the likes of Manjaro and others are either absent or less of an headache. :meowaww:

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse I found #OpenSUSE to be a nice and useable distro, but I found Yast to be clunky and confusing. I really didn’t spend time learning its peculiarities and strengths because the outdated interface pushed me away to other distros that I already knew how to use.

Having complex controls hidden behind an “advanced” mode, similar to what Ultimaker Cura does, is something I think ALL distros and desktops could benefit from.

raygervais,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse though I'm a massive @fedora advocate and will always recommend it, so glad to see OpenSUSE getting some love! I too have been running it for the past few months as a test

fedora,

@raygervais @thelinuxEXP @opensuse We also love openSUSE getting love! Happy to hear positive feedback for them. :)

@fedora @raygervais @opensuse And don’t worry, I’m not done with Fedora just yet 😏

Slacker,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse definitely one of my favorites in the "rolling distro" segment, prefer it over arch even 🙂

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Slacker @opensuse Yeah, the stability it has is insane!

I love that it's getting more love. I hope it just balloons in popularity! I remember trying suse forever ago. Like '05-ish.

RumbleArray,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse The only complain I have is that OpenSuse comes with a lot of preinstalled apps.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@RumbleArray @opensuse Yeah, I also remarked on that, but it’s easy to get rid of them if you don’t need them, so it’s not a big issue (apart from the size of the ISO)

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse Was pleasantly surprised when I tried tumbleweed last year. Rock solid, extremely up to date, and you can install RPMs on it! I’m back on Leap as of now, but if you’re in the market for a rolling release distro tumbleweed is the one to beat IMO.

e33io,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse i’ve been testing it for a few weeks too, and it’s been super-stable and awesome - gets my vote for best rolling distro

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@e33io @opensuse Yeah, I was very surprised at how robust it is!

J0S3PH,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse I tried to use openSUSE some years ago, but ended up switching to other distro, because of some things that I didn't like. I wonder how much openSUSE has changed, thank you for that video :blobfoxhappy:

LinuxGamer,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse I thought you was on Fedora and happy there? I haven't heard anything about Opensuse for a while so it's nice to hear something :)

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@LinuxGamer @opensuse Oh I like Fedora a lot, but I still get the itch to change to other distros from time to time 😁

LinuxGamer,

@thelinuxEXP @opensuse I often get that itch too, I always end up missing something or other from @fedora and end up back on it 😂
