I think I got my #Grandfather so far, that he is willing to install #Linux with me on one of his Machines. I would choose between #KDE Neon and #Linuxmint for him. Or am I completely wrong? What do you think?

P.S.: He is not like the stereotype grandfather who has no idea about tech and conputers, so it must not be the most simple way, but also not the most complicated.
I guess a #debian based distro will be fine...
Oh and no *buntu #distros!

homealone,

@MagicLike imho #linux_mint is the best choice!

@MagicLike Put on Mint, he'll love it. My 90 yer old father in law took right to it several years ago.

@MagicLike KDE Neon is ubuntu based🤷

@odo2063 I was talking about the name - I don't want any of Cannoncial's flavours, as they send data home...

@MagicLike i took solus for my parents to replace win. recently solus was a bit rough, so i dunno if i can recommend it, but if you don't want to upgrade every half year and you can live with a quite small software base it's maybe worth a check

mattswift,

@MagicLike I think you're fine with either distro - personally I'm a bigger fan of KDE Plasma for people over Cinnamon, but either work.

I actually went Linux Mint -> KDE Neon -> Debian Stable (with KDE Plasma) on my journey - I actually think Debian is also a great starting distro despite what people say, especially with Debian 12's new installer.

@mattswift yeah, but what bothers me is the ugly "Session chooser" when starting Debian stable. Also I don't understand why the only user I created wasn't admin nor in the sudoers file...

mattswift,

@MagicLike You mean the login screen? I always just bypass that anyway.

I agree that the first user not being in the sudoers file is weird; you can have Debian do this by skipping creation of root, but then you have issues getting into recovery mode.

@mattswift how do you skip the "first" login screen?

mattswift,

@MagicLike Well, the very first time I install Debian I log in through it, but then I just have KDE Plasma automatically log me in so it skips SDDM; it's in the system settings under startup.

@mattswift hmmm, so you don't enter a password anymore? - would be bad for me, as I sometimes take my laptop with me...

mattswift,

@MagicLike Yeah that's right, I agree not the best case if you want physical security, but not an issue for me at home on my PC, since I live alone.

catraxx,

@MagicLike Neon is Ubuntu LTS. But you know my opinion about that :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

@catraxx yeah ik, but they kicked a bunch of stuff out, don't install some weird snaps by default and don't send data "home" ton cannoncial...

catraxx,

@MagicLike Yes. I do honestly think that KDE is rather trustworthy. Not least because they are organized in a non-profit way.
