So I guess if I understand this podcast I am upper intermediate when it comes to Mandarin? Unfortunately while I understand this podcast quite well, no way can I speak this quickly. It is so weird that my listening skills are soooo much better than my speaking skills 🤣

@liztai I have a number of bilingual students who come in to get an exemption to our foreign language requirement at my office. I was speaking with one who says that she and her siblings each have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the language they speak at home. She could speak and listen to it but had a lot of trouble reading and writing. Her sister could listen but just couldn't speak it very well. I found the whole conversation fascinating.

glisten,

@liztai It's not really unexpected. We all listen at a higher ability than we speak, even in our native language. I can certainly understand people saying things that I couldn't come up with myself. With reading/writing it is even more obvious: just because you can read a book, doesn't mean you can write one. (The difference is between active and passive skill. Active = writing/speaking, Passive = reading/listening)
