If it helps any, from my position on the other side of the computer screen, it looks fine to me tension-wise :) I'm sure blocking will sort out what you don't like about it.

Great color and great matching pattern and yarn. I think it looks better than you're thinking right now. I just went through the same thing with the shawl I'm knitting, at first I was highly critical of how the yarn was knitting up, but now I'm almost done and I'm really happy with it.

Also, blocking is magic.

@westerling Thank you! I think I'm just used to things looking neater. I really do have magic tension most of the time.

I think even after a few cable repeats they'll kinda settle down and look nicer.

@MsHearthWitch I feel optimistic it’s going to look good with blocking. It already looks very pretty, without the critical eye of your own looking at it… and it is going to settle beautifully when blocked. What a gorgeous, rich color!

@consumablejoy Thank you! I fell SO in love with this when I saw it, and absolutely had to duplicate the shrug exactly as is.

The yarn was sold out but contacted the dyer and she met me at Fiber Fest in Seattle this summer with a bunch of skeins :D

The pattern was inspired by braided bread, so it's perfect that the yarn color is Rustic Rye :D
