Flags don't divide people, Supremacist ideologies divide us: The greed in capitalism divides us: Racial hatreds divide us. Religious doctrines of being god's chosen divide us.
While pieces of cloth, mere representations of those ideologies, can be used in creating the divisions you rightly disdain, they can and have been used to unite people against those divisive ideologies.
@RogerMills@Stoat@palestine I doubt it. The exception has been the EU flag. Otherwise, national flags unite people with their own, that's all. They may instil courage in a beleaguered nation, so I understand why Palestinians value their flag so much. But I personally feel uncomfortable on such marches, as much as I do with the easily manipulated slogan 'from the river to the sea', harmless in itself.

Just because some people misuse or abuse something doesn't mean that thing is meaningless or useless.
No. From the river to the sea Palestine will be free means freedom. Freedom from apartheid - it's right there. You need a heavy dose of anti Palestinian bigotry or projection to interpret that as violence.
When Israel says things like death to Arabs, flatten Gaza, there are no non-combatants, or calls Palestinians snakes or vermin, THAT is also self explanatory (but as genocidal language) but it is ACCEPTED and JUSTIFIED by the West.

I'm so very grateful for those sources, but that still leaves us with the question 'how many average Americans even know these sources exist?'
The biggest concern that I have in this context is how do we get a mass of 'the average man in the street" to become aware of these resources AND not to view them as unrealizable.

I'v e to agree @davidpnice , because the construction of a nation is always basing on the question and attribution: "Who is a real citizen and who's not?" This is leading into exclusion of human beings. Currently nationalism and fascism in Europe is rising and deportations of non-citizens too.
US is a nation too and that's the "work" of the national state.
I know from colonized African people, that they were suffering, because the European colonialists destroyed their tribes by creating nations and borders.
