witchescauldron,

The "shouting into the void" of the has become much worse with the influx of the people back to the

Q. what actually makes this space live?

BeAware,

@witchescauldron not sure about you. But I get WAY more interaction on the #Fediverse than I ever did on corporate social media....🤷‍♂️

witchescauldron,

@BeAware we had to shut down the two instances we had been running for 5 years because of this "shouting into the void" issue. its getting much worse, yes I understand It's still better than the #dotcons, but it's a very real issue if you have been her since the beginning #OMN

BeAware,

@witchescauldron ah, well I'm sorry you've been having that issue. I just haven't had the same experience here in the past 9 months.

I get TONS of interactions a day and usually at least 1-2 followers a day. I can't complain. I hope it gets better for you.🙏

witchescauldron,

@BeAware that's an interesting reply, am not talking about a personal expirence, am talking about a generalisation of thusends of users over 5 years. Good to focus. Signal-to-noise.

This can easily slip into https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem which is likely the root of the issue I am talking about, lets focus please.

BeAware,

@witchescauldron Well, let's go back.

Instead of talking about my experience, like you said. Let me instead try to answer your question a bit with ideas that are irrelevant to that issue.

Q: What makes this openweb space so valuable?

A: Well, for me, the biggest positive is that I am not tied down to a specific website or service. If the admin of my instance isn't doing things the way I agree with, I can pretty easily move instances and not have to worry too much.

Another benefit, for me at least, is that no matter which Fediverse software you're coming from, you can mostly be seen across Fedi with little issues. I can be on Pixelfed and see an instagram-esque UI and still interact with those who prefer a Twitter-esque UI and then there's WordPress and many other services which can connect to each other.

witchescauldron,

@BeAware

What happens if you are the admin of the instance, why are you running it? If the "users" do not care enough to engage and can leave as if it was disposable?

"Another benefit, for me at least," and "you can mostly be seen across Fedi with little issues" "I can be on"

Is the kinda issues that make the "community" based "native" crew reluctant.

And yes, what you are doing and saying is "common sense" of the influx. This is what the original post is about "shouting into the void"

Without community, this reboot fails no mattery how meany "users and reach" they get. As there will be nobody to run it, good to think about this.

BeAware,

@witchescauldron There's at least 20,000+ administrators of different instances across Fedi so there definitely is "somebody to run it"

I am running my own instance because I don't feel like I am a part of a community. At least I wasn't when I originally joined and I wanted to jump in as fast as I could and control what I saw and not let anyone else control it for me. That is why I run it.

On the topic of community, there's actually a lot of those here, you just have to find the right instance that has the community you're looking for.

A LOT of people browse the local timeline exclusively. Of course there are many other instances that are meant to just be a "melting pot" to specifically "shout into the void" of Fedi, but it's not the only option.

For example, aipub.social is meant for those who are intrigued by AI. mstdn.games is meant for anyone who is interested in games, including "content creators".

You just have to do a little research and find an instance that matches what you're looking for. It's a daunting task, because like I said, there's 20,000+ instances, but it can be done.😅
