Test fit of my DIY network rack in the closet. I wonder how the closet doors will work. #network #diy #Ethernet

jbaggs,

@ai6yr
@ai6yr Got a nice smooth place on top for a laptop if you ever have to console into anything.

@jbaggs LOL horizontal services here collect stuff, I will probably try to balance my printer on there to prevent that issue.

@ai6yr Is that a Cisco Catalyst... 3550 or 3560 ?

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ChampersBE Yes, 3560. New to me. Not sure if I'll use it but it was free at our local material reuse place. Catch and release if I don't use it, LOL. https://m.ai6yr.org/@ai6yr/111791351391311706

@ai6yr Ah yes, that switch 🙂

I have the Gigabit, non-PoE version in my rack at the DC, very happy with it:
"C3560 uptime is 5 years, 6 weeks, 3 days, 22 hours, 52 minutes
System returned to ROM by power-on"

Not sure if FastEthernet is good enough for you, if it were the G(igabit) version I'd say it was a keeper.

@ai6yr If you're interested in keeping it, I have IPServices software for it so you can run OSPF and BGP etc on it 🙂

@ChampersBE Ooh, point me at that for sure... haven't figure out plans yet!

@ai6yr By modern standards the 3560 is pretty outdated and power hungry unfortunately.
But if you're aggregating a bunch of PoE IP Cameras or IP phones it can still be useful. Or for pure fun lab use.

@ChampersBE Yeah, the power hungry part is probably the biggest issue for me. Loudness of fans and too much power consumption get equipment booted out of my office, LOL. Thus the lack of Dell PowerEdge servers... I plugged a free one in once and could hear it through the whole house.

"HEY, DID YOU TURN ON A JET ENGINE IN THERE?!?!"

*not actually using any of that equipment in there, that is all just extra equipment I was using to test the rack measurements.
