Started a new sculpting project in Blender Sculpt Mode.

I love SDF modeling, but I also like to remain adroit in traditional 3D sculpting. Both techniques have their own charm.

In this stage I'm determining the global shapes and add some crude first details.

More'll follow soon.

Blender sculpture update…

Separated his shirt to a separate object, and started detailing the head.

I like Blender Sculpt Mode. I prefer certain tools over similar tools in ZBrush or 3D-Coat, such as Blender's Elastic Deform tool, making use of Kelvinlets for silky-smooth deformation.

More will follow tomorrow.

@metin I think I know who this could be be now...

@mbt3d I'm not planning to turn him into someone known, but he currently reminds me a little of Mike from Breaking Bad. 🙂

@metin Good 'cause I was thinking of Vlad, which I thought you wouldn't want to model 😂

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@mbt3d Vlad…? Vlad Tepes, the Impaler? 😁 Or Vlado, from V-Ray? 😁

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@mbt3d No, wait, of course, you mean that Russian fella. 😏

@metin Yea the former KGB operative.

Blender sculpture update…

His head is starting to take shape. Added some simple temporary eyes. Some more head / face refinements will follow, then it's time for the shirt.

Blender sculpture update…

I guess modeling is gradually nearing completion. Working on the shirt now.

@metin Sorry, but I can't unsee it 😂

@daniel 😆 My sculpture is Squidward's charismatic nephew. 😁

Portrait of an imaginary person.

Sculpted and rendered in Blender (Cycles renderer).

@metin This is really nice Metin, the texture lighting make this into a really nice portrait, as Kai said American gothic, Grant Wood comes to mind.

@mbt3d Thanks a lot Mark!

For color management I chose the AgX Greyscale look. It required searching for the right color values and light strength to get it right, but I like the depth of the result.

Blender portrait sculpture work-in-progress stages.

I decided to sculpt this guy as a single mesh, instead of the usual blocking out with separate primitives. Then I separated the shirt once that was sufficiently shaped.

I get a lot of "handsome Squidward" vibes from him.

@SpookyDoom Haha, you're not the first one. @daniel also thought so:

I didn't know Handsome Squidward yet. I've become curious to see that episode.

@metin Do you have a special reason to sculpt the figure in one peace? I always try to divide all objects to keep control over them and get better gaps later when melting them together. I your example I would start separated. Nose, ears, eyes, hair, chest, arm parts, etc. All separate. At the end, I join and melt them together. I like this way because it gives more freedom in sculpting. So I can always change the size of the nose or ears, at any time.

@CWernerArt Yes, I usually also start by blocking out separate primitive shapes, but sometimes I like to push, pull and carve everything using a single shape, for a certain traditional clay sculpting feel.

@metin I was just curious. There're different ways to work. Just for "doodling around" this is definitely a good option. I like the seperated way, because it provides faster results and I save time. 🙂

@CWernerArt 👍 I'm about to separate the clothing part, so I'm working the other way round in this scene: once the major features have been formed, it's time to separate parts that should be separate. 🙂
