Tell me the story behind your profile banner, such as the one you see below and on my profile.

Mine is a screenshot from my favorite video game of all time, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, released on September 16th, 1985.

It's a game I've put thousands of hours into, both back when it was originally released and still to this very day.

@cliffwade Mine's a photo of a beach in my home state on the day I took my dog to one of his first beaches. He ate way too much sand that day and caused some issues with expelling it a couple days later, but he had a blast.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@eroc1990 Aww, that is awesome! I love great stories like this for things such as a profile banner. Glad he had fun, though sucks he got a bit sick.

eroc1990,
@eroc1990@mastodon.parastor.net avatar

@cliffwade Sand + stomachs = 🚫. But it's the same for him with grass, or leaves, or his own fur, or paper towels. He doesn't discriminate. Everything is his food.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@eroc1990 LOL I hear you there. I've had my fair share of dogs, and cats for that matter, that do the same thing.

eroc1990,
@eroc1990@mastodon.parastor.net avatar

@cliffwade It's so bad with samoyeds. There's just so. Much. Fur.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@eroc1990 Oh for sure. I can't imagine how much he sheds on a daily basis.

nico,
@nico@lepoulsdumonde.com avatar

@cliffwade Same, I stopped sleeping at night playing it !

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nico Really? That is awesome to hear.

I still play it regularly, and I still have a 4 page cheat sheet for the entire game that I designed back in 1985/1986 that many people in my high school used. While it's not the original copy from back then, it's very close.

As you see below, that's just one page.

nico,
@nico@lepoulsdumonde.com avatar

@cliffwade wow this brings back old memories. I haven't played it since then though ! and I finished it !!

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nico Lots of great memories for sure.

I play it every few days actually, for an hour or so usually. It's available via Origin Launcher or whatever they call it now days.

I have completed the game 500+ times since 1986 when I completed it the first time.

nico,
@nico@lepoulsdumonde.com avatar

@cliffwade haha you're really dedicated !

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nico Very much so. I've used the name "Hawkwind" online since 1986 in various ways as it was once my online name everywhere. Not so much today. My Gmail is based on Hawkwind, and I own(nothing there now) SeerOfSouls.com which if you remember, Hawkwind, the Seer Of Souls, was a major character in Ultima IV.

nico,
@nico@lepoulsdumonde.com avatar

@cliffwade yes of course, now I remember !

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nico Like I said, it's been a big part of my life for 35+ years now, which is just crazy to think that it's been that long since it was released.

I plan on getting the box cover art tattooed on me one day soon hopefully.

nico,
@nico@lepoulsdumonde.com avatar

@cliffwade haha you're crazy 😂

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nico Not the first time I've been told that, and I'm sure it won't be the last. 🤪

victor,

@cliffwade mine is of hot air balloons in flight at the Lake Powell balloon regatta in Page, Arizona from November of 2021.

🎈 🏜️

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@victor Awesome! I love hot air balloons. When I was a kid, I lived on 75 acres and we used to have a bunch of them land on our property. I can only remember the name of one, which you can look up, Rikki Tikki Tavi. The pins you will see online, I used to have a few as the owner gave them to me. I wish I still had at least one.

@cliffwade

Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis , with the roof retracted. I took this pic at a game a few years ago.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@brian Very cool indeed! Certainly a great photo too. Stadiums can provide some amazing shots in various ways.

HeatherFromTexas,
@HeatherFromTexas@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade Mine is a sunset at the farm. I just love a colorful sunset.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@HeatherFromTexas That's a beautiful photo as well. Sunsets are absolutely amazing and one of my favorite things to photograph.

EyeAmShaf,

@cliffwade mine is from one of my favorite places on earth! The Beach! I thought this shot from below the pier was a cool one! 🙌

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@EyeAmShaf Nice, and what a beautiful shot indeed. What beach exactly if you don't mind me asking?

EyeAmShaf,

jbqueru,
@jbqueru@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade Mine is a logo of my demo crew, drawn in 1993, for a demo screen on the Atari ST that I coded that had different graphics each time you launched it.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@jbqueru Oh wow! That is awesome. I never owned an Atari ST, though I wish I would have. I had Atari consoles, and other consoles, but none of the computers and similar items back then, other than the ColecoVision Adam computer.

jbqueru,
@jbqueru@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade That was my 16-bit life (and arguably my transition into 32-bit as also had a Falcon 030). And I wrote about 100k lines of assembly code for it.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@jbqueru Very nice! Those were the good ole days for sure. I was on the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 back in those days and for me that's where I really found my love of computing and technology. After that, I didn't own a computer until 1999 and I wish I had others in between those times to experience them.

jbqueru,
@jbqueru@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade C64 and C128 were interesting beasts, arguably a tiny bit weird. My 8-bit life was on an Amstrad CPC6128, but my coding for it was limited to BASIC.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@jbqueru Oh, the good ole Amstrad CPC6128. I didn't own one, but a friend of mine did. Definitely a bit different from the C64/128 stuff and yet another one I wish I would have had more time with. BASIC was something I coded a bit of, but that was where coding stopped for me unfortunately.

jbqueru,
@jbqueru@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade I didn't know it at the time, and those were coincidences, but there are some deep similarities between the CPC and the ST (in both strengths and weaknesses).

Fun thing, I'm back to coding for even older stuff now.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@jbqueru I've read similar things that they had a lot of similarities. Again, I really wish I would have experienced those platforms I feel I missed out on a lot of great stuff.

Oh really? That's interesting to hear. Are you doing it in your own time or is this something work related?

jbqueru,
@jbqueru@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade On my own time. I'm taking a career break right now as I'm in the middle of moving.

gmraphi,
@gmraphi@rollenspiel.social avatar

@cliffwade Mine is a wallpaper I made for a campaign. The logo is close to the Jedi Order but it's not quite that.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@gmraphi Woah! That is absolutely awesome looking!

gmraphi,
@gmraphi@rollenspiel.social avatar

@cliffwade Also you work at Nova Launcher? The best thing in Android! I love it! The wallpaper thing I do I always use Nova Launcher to add suitable icons. The endless customization is so great.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@gmraphi I do work for @novalauncher and have for 8+ years now.

Thank you so much for using the app and for the support and of course the kind words. That truly means the world to me.

Great home screen as well.

benpocalypse,
@benpocalypse@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade When I was younger, I was so jealous of folks that had computers to play this on. I was so stoked when I finally got it for the NES. Great game.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@benpocalypse Such a great game to play back in the Commodore 64 days. I got it right after release. I had never played or even heard of Ultima until my best friend at the time got it on release date from his mom. I instantly fell in love.

I bought it on release date for the NES as well and beat it 50+ times on that platform alone.

Strider,
@Strider@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade Mine isn't related to gaming. Maybe I should change it...

I love wildlife, nature documentaries, dogs and wolves, so it seemed appropriate.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Strider Very appropriate indeed. I like it, especially since it's animated.

Strider,
@Strider@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade Yes, that helped a lot. I think I should change mine to gaming, though. I never played Ultima (played it very briefly) but it's an important game, in the scheme of things

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Strider You should give it some time. It's on Origin or whatever they call their launcher these days.

I agree, I feel it's a very important game in the scheme of things as it's one that really put RPG's on the map in many ways.

Strider,
@Strider@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade In some ways graphical fidelity isn't important to me, but in another there is only so far I'm prepared to regress.

I'm in a terrible rut where games are concerned, there is nothing I want to play or risk my steam credit buying.

I would say the 'ugliest' game I've considered playing of late is Dwarf Fortress.

Not always the case, though. FTL isn't a visually stunning game but it is a great game. Project Zomboid isn't a looker but I play that too. I guess we all have our limit.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Strider I too feel like I'm in a rut where gaming is concerned and what I want to play.

Destiny, which I have 12,000+ hours into 1 and 2 is in a really bad place right now and it's just not fun anymore. Fortnite is well, just Fortnite. It's good and bad all at the same time.

To me, games don't have to look fabulous or the greatest if they play well or they are fun. To me, playability and having fun is what it's all about.

Strider,
@Strider@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade I used to love Counter-strike but I've not really played competitive shooters (with the exception of DayZ) for quite some time so that rules out fortnight. I've heard too many bad tales about Destiny to try them.

Here is my current wishlist. There is much on there which is a 'must buy'.

https://store.steampowered.com/wishlist/id/StriderNovo/#sort=discount

I'll certainly pick up the following on sale, at some point: Elden Ring, Worship, Dungeons 4, Stalker 2 and most important of all, The Wayward Realms

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Strider Lots of great games on that list, especially CyberPunk, which is easily in my top 10, and possibly in my top 5 of all time. Such a great, fun, beautiful game!

Strider,
@Strider@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade I've poured thousands of hours into several games so not sure which one to choose, Project Zomboid, Football Manager, Counter-strike, Half-life. The list goes on.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Strider I hear you there. If it weren't for Ultima, I'm not sure what I'd choose. Likely something like Pac-Man, but Destiny 1 and 2 rank way up there, as does Fortnite and a few others.
