In my old Raspberry Pi A+ setups, I've experimented with various operating systems. Initially, it was Debian, then Alpine Linux, and for many years now, it's been FreeBSD (in read-only mode).
If I'm now wrong, FreeBSD 14 will be the last release to support this architecture, so at some point, I'll have to make a change. I've been thinking about installing NetBSD for a while now, but these devices also communicate and operate via Wireguard tunnels. NetBSD 10 will support them, so it's likely the natural "evolution" for these devices that have been handling a significant portion of my home automation for almost a decade, with home made software. And, I expect they'll continue to do so for another 10 years!
