Not bad; not bad at all 🙂

Especially for 52°N 🤷‍♂️

@markmccaughrean oh I love these

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@falcennial Thanks 🙇‍♂️ I have some DSLR photos that will need some processing & even though it’s almost 2am, I’m going out again, as the peak of the storm could arrive soon 🙂

falcennial,
@falcennial@mastodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean just amazing. thanks for sharing this wonder of the natural world with us on the other side. I am 11:45 am about to vacuum the damn house wondering how that aurora cookin

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@falcennial This storm looks to keep delivering over the weekend – hopefully you’ll get a chance to see it too 👍

falcennial,
@falcennial@mastodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean great to know, thank you bro! perhapsI will climb Ohinerau with my phone and take a few photos of my own

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

And could this curtain be any more crisp & colourful? 😻

Again, just with the iPhone, so subject to all the usual crap, but still …

doddington,
@doddington@mastodon.world avatar

@markmccaughrean I’m so jealous, my daughter and I ventured out to Happisburgh lighthouse ( great viewing spot with a clear North Sea view ) but on arrival was engulfed with thick ‘pea souper’ sea fog. Waited a bit and returned to Norwich with the low fog / clouds hastily following us. Arrived home late to see nothing and soon got cloud covered ☹️. I think we managed to do everything possible to avoid seeing the display - at least we’ll be OK when all the triffids appear!! 🥀

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@doddington Boo – that’s rubbish 😔

I was on our beach until 03:30 or so & there was still some excellent stuff going on. But it began to get a bit chilly & my DSLR lens started fogging up as some haar started to develop. So I called it a night & got to bed around 04:30.

The storm is still clearly ongoing though according the magnetic field measurements, so hopefully you’ll have a second chance tonight. Stay away from the sea though 🙂

doddington,
@doddington@mastodon.world avatar

@markmccaughrean indeed keeping an eye on the sky at home tonight - hopefully it will erupt perfectly after Eurovision!

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@doddington Im out on the bike ignoring the E thing. Not even sure my normally addicted family are watching as a matter of protest 🤷‍♂️😬

synlogic,
@synlogic@toot.io avatar

@markmccaughrean thats real? in the sky?

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@synlogic Yep. Not as colourful to the naked eye, as fairly faint & just your rods get activated. But you can see some red & purple when there are brighter curtains. Cameras show the colours beautifully though 👍

@markmccaughrean @synlogic

In what geographic region do you make these fabulous observations? And time zone?

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@interplanetarisch @synlogic Wassenaar in The Netherlands, UTC+2 at the moment.

@kellylepo

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@begsby @kellylepo Yep – was on the beach until 03:30 chatting about space weather & solar cycles with folks watching the light show 🙂👍 #scicomm

Impertinenzija,
@Impertinenzija@mastodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean How much are you able to see just by looking at at the sky? I'm in Bavaria and thought there's nothing at all until I made some shots with my phone.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@Impertinenzija The aurora was very obvious to the naked eye, with lots of structure clearly visible. But it was mostly grey, because it was fairly faint, albeit red was easily seen at points when the auroral curtains brightened.

Impertinenzija,
@Impertinenzija@mastodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean I'm lucky to have some trees around blocking the street lights out, so I was able to see at least some structure as well as soon as my eyes adapted.

But nothing compared to your pics. I love them. ^^

secretbatcave,
@secretbatcave@don.secretbatcave.co.uk avatar

@markmccaughrean @cgbassa that’s grand! I also wish I had thought it too.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@secretbatcave @cgbassa You may get a chance tomorrow – the storm will likely continue.

AstroMikeHudson,
@AstroMikeHudson@mastodon.online avatar

@markmccaughrean Very nice! We’re a bit further south at 44 N but the forecast shows it dipping to lower latitudes in N America. Not sure if that’s simply due to the offset of magnetic North or something else going on.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@AstroMikeHudson Exactly – the magnetic North Pole is in Canada, so the auroral circle is asymmetrically displaced towards North America. On the other hand, all of the 48 contiguous states of the US lie south of all of the UK, so … 🤷‍♂️🙂
