RULE OF THUMB (OBSERVED):

if you make a computer game "these days" and you call it a Rogue-like, and, if you are under the age of 40-45 or so, then:

it is (almost certainly & nearly always) NOT A FUCKING Rogue-like!!!!!!

@synlogic @jake4480 Whenever I ponder writing a roguelike, I tend to eventually go ... "Or, I could just play Moria." I know Moria isn't even the latest and fanciest in the Moria branch, but I still like it.

Last time I had a serious thought about writing a roguelike was when I watched the first two seasons of The Witcher and thought, "I wish I could play a game based on this." and then "No, not like that. More like Moria." ... and then I spent a few months playing Moria.

@isaackuo @jake4480 I remember Moria! loved it. also Angband. Hack. the orig Rogue. really love NetHack though. I'm putting little homages to NetHack in my game Slartboz

@synlogic @isaackuo haha yeah I played Mac Moria! I do love Nethack, Angband, the original Rogue, even Lindsey's Dungeon Crawl. And DCSS, Brogue, Larn..

@isaackuo @jake4480 back in 2008 or 2009 or so I had a booth at a game con promoting my first (and I think the world's first commercial) Roguelike, Dead By Zombie. and I was selling licenses to it from the booth, in person. for like $5 or $15 IIRC. anyway many people walked up and bought a license. a group of girl scouts did (well, duh!) but also... one of the NetHack core DevTeam guys! he just walked up. forget his name, was kinda intimidated. I dont think was the NetHack "Isaac" dev but unsure

I hope to build a kind of de facto sequel to DBZ within my game Slartboz. SB has most of what it needs to do it. its engine is more sophisticated and exciting too imo

Slartboz has a whole plot line about a massive herd of zombies shambling slowly toward the hometown of Abro & his frens The Lazer Lizards. and Its Up To Them To Save The Day. that becomes "The Battle of West Pell". have video & screenshot previews of it up

@maciekglowka @jake4480 ok I took a quick glance at your game Monk Tower. impression is 2 or 3. and age 39 is asymptotically close to 40 so... "I'll allow it!" (goes back to sleep in my coffin)

@synlogic 😂 yeah, calling things roguelikes when they're not is an EPIDEMIC, even when they say "action roguelike" it's like guys, you just have a platformer. hahaha

@jake4480 when they think "sudden death" makes something a Rogue-like, or, procgen, I'm like "Aw, thats sooo cute. So precious! Kids, get off my fucking lawn."

(vivid memories of plenty of sudden death games and/or procgen games before and outside of the early Roguelikes. hell the entire 70s/80s arcade game craze and home video game cartridge console industry was built on notion of sudden death AND losing all past progress! and soooo many early computer games used procgen...)

@synlogic Right? All old NES games have that. You die INSTANTLY. Like Contra. I challenge anyone to make it through even a couple levels of that. Ghosts n Goblins etc
