All hostas are fully #edible - from root to shoots to stems to foliage to flowers. Roots/shoots/leaves taste like combo of asparagus & endives - cook them up, in similar ways. Flowers can be sugared & they taste like raw honey.
@_L1vY_ Yes - all hostas are fully edible! One of the few plants where entire plant is safe to eat. I encourage folks to plant them & learn to cook & eat them. Excellent in gardens & for local food security! Win-win!
@deepmud As do deer, rabbits & several other wild creatures! However - I caution folks on taking edible plants based on only wildlife consumption. Many plants & fungi are safely ingested by wildlife but toxic to humans.
@deepmud I will tell all folks - every wild mushroom & every wild plant can be eaten at least once. Sometimes, you don't survive after eating once. It's why I tell folks who are new to wild food foraging to spend more time with learning & to never ever eat any wild foods that you can't 100% identify as safe to ingest.

Iirc there's been a few cases here in the Nordics of people who grew up in Thailand (iirc) eating really poisonous mushrooms because they look like nice edible ones there.
I know enough to know that I can identify only one edible and one poisonous kind. One each. Out of the gods know how many are out there.
@Gurre@msquebanh@deepmud I, too, know one edible and one utterly toxic mushroom, and need to spend hours making spore prints and poring through books to ID any others.
@msbellows@Gurre@deepmud I highly recommend joining mushroom identification walks/workshops in your local areas! It's truly the best way to learn - in the field, with local experienced mushroom foragers or naturalists.
I'm blessed to have a few friends who are very experienced & have been learning through them.
@Gurre@msquebanh@deepmud (To make it worse: the one mushroom I know is safe and will happily harvest and cook and know how to cook etc. is the oyster, which is delicious a.f. but also is basically the Chicken McNuggets of mushrooms.)
@msquebanh. Hello PNW. We haven’t eaten the hostas yet. I will look at them differently now. We have volunteer lettuce ready to harvest. This will be the next meal. The hostas will wait. #growyourown.
@Pollinators I died on surgical beds twice in childhood & had to be electrocuted back to life. Ever since then, have tried to appreciate every day I'm alive & make the best out of what I can experience & enjoy, while still alive 💗
