Holy 💩 Someone combined their sewing machine with #3DPrinting, a homebrew #CNC, and made a #DIY computer controlled #embroidery machine!

🤔 I wonder how long before someone manages to incorporate multi-color embroidery without manual thread switching.

@masukomi this is a project I’m actively working on right now! Well, not the multi-thread part. But I got my setup running off an SD card so I don’t have to have it connected to my computer.

@jovial_cynic Woot! Are you building it to make something in particular or just for the fun of making a cool thing?

@masukomi I suffer from an extreme case of “I can probably make that.” Consequently, I have a ton of proof-of-concept project beginnings, with no real purpose other than to say I was able to do it. Is this ADHD? Probably. But like da Vinci level of ADHD. Absent-minded professor level.

@jovial_cynic speaking as someone with ADHD... that sounds like archetypal ADHD behavior to me. ;)

I've been going down a little bit of a homebrew #CNC rabbit hole lately, because I want to CNC aluminum, & CNCs are $$$

Turns out, It's not actually hard. You basically buy a board design for it, wire it to some stepper motors & some switches, plug in your computer, tell the computer what's wired into what port, do some calibration steps with free software, and "voila" CNC.

Choosing "good" parts is a thing, but that's ALWAYS a thing with homebrew & there are kits.

@masukomi I wish there were a Bambu-moment for home CNC/laser like there’s been for FDM, but in the absence I’m aiming to get something like this on-line this year for acrylic/aluminum as well… hit the gaps where FDM and Resin can’t really manufacture well.

@krisbrowne42 i feel like laser engravers are there with ease of use, BUT they critically lack safety stuff, like enclosures that’ll guarantee no light in dangerous wavelengths escapes, and ventilation.

In my mind it’s the milling coolant and debris that’s going to be the hardest aspect to make metal CNC “easy peasy”.

there is 1 that comes close but it’ll like $10k

@krisbrowne42 correction: The $10K thing I’m thinking of is a water jet. I Need to revisit a current state of commercial desktop CNC machines.
