Well, looks like I'll be getting a Bambu Lab P1S printer.

trestrantham,

@rasterweb Looking at the same! The new mini looks cool but I think the P1S is the sweet spot.

@rasterweb same.

@rasterweb although I think I’ll get the bundle with the AMS and the full enclosure from the start. Done with tweaking/tuning/upgrading and just want reliable prints.

@mathiasx I got the P1S which is fully enclosed, but no AMS as I don't care about multicolor at this point.

Immersive,

@rasterweb what made you decide against a Prusa? Not saying the Bambu Lab P1S is a bad decision. I went the Prusa way myself, the printer kit is currently on transit after a 2 months wait and I'm looking for early heads up I might have missed during my research.

@Immersive @rasterweb the Bambu is a lot more turnkey, but Prusa just got a little bit more competitive with shipping input shaping. The things missing from the Prusa for me are an enclosure, the integrated multi-filament system, automatic “booger” cleaning, and using the built in webcam to detect spaghetti prints — all fairly well done in the Bambu printers.

@mathiasx @Immersive I have a Prusa MINI+ and I love it. The only thing I don't like is the build volume, as I occasionally want to print larger.

Also, what clinched it for me was a friend who has been printing longer than I have (and I've been at it 12 years) saying he loved his X1 Carbon and said if I get the P1S and I am not blown away he'd buy it from me at the same price I paid.

So... worse case I hate it and I'm out the shipping cost. Otherwise I get a modern large printer. Win-Win!?

@mathiasx @Immersive I built an enclosure for my Prusa MINI out of scrap material (cardboard mostly) since it lives in my Wisconsin basement.

I need to do the firmware upgrade for the input shaping, but overall it prints really well.

I've had it for 21 months and just had one weird huge failure issue, but I've never had anything break (fingers crossed) and it's all original parts, including the plate. No upgrades needed, just printing. That's what I want.

Immersive,

@mathiasx @rasterweb That automatic "booger" cleaning feature is something unknown to me, I only found a "self-cleaning toolhead" mention in the tom's hardware review, but didn't find any details about it. What sorcery is this?

@Immersive @rasterweb on the bigger Bambus, it has a little chute in the back. I think Gcode for each start of print moves the print head to flick it in the chute to clear that little coil you get after warming up the extruder. The new A1 mini has a flicker thing built into the left side of its x axis, which you can see in some YT reviews.

I have seen where people mount a brass brush upside down on the left side of their X axis at build plate & have Gcode to scrape past on Enders, Prusas, etc.

@mathiasx @Immersive Is it needed if you don't have the AMS? In the printer I use it extrudes a bit before the print, which sticks to the plate, and then the printer lays down a line to clear the nozzle. It's been many years since the "booger" has been an issue for me.

Immersive,

@rasterweb @mathiasx the starting GCode on my old printer places the extruder on its starting position on the corner of the bed and only then turns the heating element on. Whatever bit of plastic that gets out of the nozzle prematurely gets laid down on that starting line, the "booger" hasn't been an issue for me either.

Thanks for the input though! There are indeed lots of cool features on this machine.

@Immersive @rasterweb the point I missed is that there’s less to clean off the bed, it can deposit those waste pieces down the chute or off to the side. That said, I just watched a video of the Bambu AMS for multicolor prints and it generates a ton of waste in terms of boogers and a “color change monolith” if you are printing different colors within layers. — I’m not sure I want to print multicolor within layers though.

@mathiasx @Immersive Ah, gotcha. For my Prusa I remove the plate, flex it to get the part off, pull off the priming line, and toss it in the bin. Literally takes a few seconds. ;)

@mathiasx @Immersive I've also seen a bunch of people saying "Oh I don't use the multicolor feature, I just use the feature where it switches to the next roll when one runs out" which is interesting but not work the extra expense for me.

@rasterweb Just looked at the Tom's Hardware review. Sweet rig!
