Haily, to random

This is a test.

Haily,

Cane, IOS / Mac OS, and no Braille if I can help it. I can read far more quickly and efficiently with a screen reader.

Haily,

I haven’t used Linux in a long time, but in general if you’re using the mate desktop, it works reasonably well provided you’re comfortable doing a lot of things via the command line.

Setting up a VM or loading an ISO of your preferred distribution onto a USB stick is fairly straight forward, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a go if you have the time. Hint: If booting from USB, run CMD as admin, type reagentc.exe /boottore, restart, enable narrator, select your USB stick or whatever storage device you’re using, and enjoy. This came in very handy when my sighted friend couldn’t figure out my computer’s BIOS and I didn’t want to have to deal with VMware Player.

Haily,

It would be great if there was some sort of dedicated list of instances similar to what Lemmy already has. Of course the process of creating an instance could do with simplification as well. IMO the focus on keeping this instance up and running, as opposed to working on Kbin itself, could be hugely detrimental to the entire project in the longterm.

Haily,

I was originally in the let’s just sit back and see what happens camp, but this article completely changed my perspective. A very interesting read. I do, however, agree that companies creating their own instances to advertise their products can only be good for us in the longrun.

On a similar note, I was recently reading about Microsoft’s efforts to dominate the whole browser space in the 90s, and I think it’s a very good example of the worst kind of capitalism.

Just a heads up, but if you favourite or boost anything, the accessibility labels don’t update to reflect this.

Lemmy have fixed this problem in the latest developer build, might be in stable by now. They replaced the buttons with toggles which screen readers can recognise. Kbin’s accessibility is top notch aside from this one problem, so chears for that. :)

Haily,

Not sure if this is a hot take or not, but modern Star Trek sucks arse. The magic died with voyager, everything after that has been trite and forgettable. And I’m not even talking about those god awful movies.

Haily,

Voyager is definitely hit and miss, although I do like a lot of the stuff they did with the Borg, with the exception of the incredibly weird Borg queen. Also, Q’s dynamic with the Voyager crew is something truly special.

I love TNG though. It took awhile to truly get off the ground, but my god it was great once Gene Roddenberry finally left.

Haily,

Good point, I forgot about that one. That's perhaps the one exception I'll make.

Haily,

Nice summary, though I should probably mention that I’m 19, so probably in the age bracket that ought to be enjoying new Trek, and yet I just can’t. It’s such an obvious downgrade in my opinion, and I know plenty of people my age who agree with me. Doctor Who has also endured a similar decline due to a succession of incompetent show runners, which is truly unfortunate.

Haily,

Really? I thought that was basically the universally held opinion at this point. Gene Roddenberry had all sorts of sentimental ideas about what he wanted to do with the show, and it wasn’t until he left that the story really started to ramp up. I can think of so many episodes in season one and two that just shouldn’t have been there at all.

Haily,

Here’s a Quora thread I found which explains things quite nicely. Unfortunately I was unable to find a proper article.

https://www.quora.com/Beyond-writing-why-did-Star-Trek-The-Next-Generation-improve-so-much-after-season-2-The-extras-acting-music-and-everything-about-The-Royale-is-just-so-ridiculous-but-then-things-improve-so-much-Why

Roddenberry was definitely a genius, but he made his fair share of stupid decisions, particularly towards the end of his life.

Haily,

@snacks

@noodle Technically he could take away the BOA’s independence if he truly wanted to, I believe Liz Truss threatened to do exactly that when they were fighting her tax plans, but the markets probably wouldn’t like it if he did. It’s weird to think that not so very long ago, politicians having complete control over interest rates was entirely normal.

How do we get an instance removed?

It looks like a new spamming tactic will be to set up your own instance and then just mass spam to other instances from there. Case in point, vive.im I've been noticing spam in one magazine from a user of this. I banned them, but they can still post for some reason. Decided to visit the instance and it looks like some default...

Haily,

I think Lemmy may be doing something similar, actually. At least, I’ve noticed that smaller instances don’t seem to be federating nearly as well as larger instances. Obviously Mastodon have figured out a way around this as well, so it’s clearly doable.
