While setting up a #BlindShell for a friend, I’ve seriously thought about considering getting one for myself because both Apple and android don’t quite fulfill that productivity niche. For example, both have show stopping bugs that have been in each operating system for years now related to accessibility and, I’m starting to realize that simpler technologies have a longer shelf life. I know that the blind shell runs on android, but there is a certain level of efficiency that I get with a piece of technology actually working rather than fulfilling marketing endeavors. Also, you all have never seen a battery life like this before on any smart device. It’s freaking huge and it is the best of both worlds in my opinion. A tactile keypad with a smart phone underbelly. Sure, the blind shell three will happen soon I think, but I was quite impressed with how little I had to Fight with the device in order to just use it. It was simple. It didn’t have all the bells and whistles like my iPhone, but I could use it without frustration. Are there bugs? Of course, but I’m seriously thinking about going back to the 1990s

Greetings!

As an , this is my secondary account alongside my main one found at @queenslight.
This one will mostly be for times when I have lots to write about (not that I really need 8000 characters), or when the Mastodon instance I'm on is down do to an update/attack.

I do still have the instance I am on too, but unlike with Misskey, Calckey's interface definitely has a much nicer learning curve, and even with its beginnings, is way more Friendly to screen reader users, even without keyboard shortcuts yet.
Not much else to say, thus may you all have a lovely rest of your day!

Update!

Remember above I said there weren't keyboard shortcuts yet I stand corrected! J/K are definitely here. Not sure if the question-mark key shows them all or not, since I haven't gotten that command to work yet. I'll keep looking.

weirdwriter,

@queenslight @queenslight I’m looking to read about some external things I can hook into Calckey. Got any documentation links I can browse?

[Blog Post] Unblocking the Wordpress Block Editor https://www.applevis.com/blog/unblocking-wordpress-block-editor

weirdwriter,

@arush @AppleVis Ironically, the visual editor in the Classic version did a better job at rich text editing, but yeah, this is what I have to do, is work offline than copy and paste. If I need to add a specific block functionality, I keep an external text file of all the codes I use, like the shortcodes block and the category block and more. My reference document is huge with all kinds of code that isn't the paragraph block that I just copy and paste into the code editor.

weirdwriter,

@arush @AppleVis Arg! Good point! For me, forms are the biggest pain point but I guess I can still use shortcodes to make a form, but the block version gives me a few more field types, but yeah, that's exactly what I've been doing. Thank you for the heads up. I've also been publishing by email, but the Markdown doesn't register if I post by email for some reason. Is there a way to configure Thunderbird so that WP dot com recognizes the markdown if I publish straight through email?

weirdwriter,

@ShaulaEvans @grrrr_shark That is still happening? I don’t understand why people are using Audible like a library when they can get a non resident library card cheaper than an #Audible subscription.

weirdwriter,

@CoolBlenderKitten @audiobooks @ShaulaEvans Mainly a reply for others viewing this group. You can get non-resident library cards that are much cheaper than N #Audible Subscription. I would honestly recommend that than using Audible like a library. And, for others that are reading this group, check out #AudibleGate

weirdwriter,

@CoolBlenderKitten @audiobooks @ShaulaEvans I'm sorry about that! I tried to keep it as vaugue as possible because I wasn't sure how other countries library systems did it but if you need to get a non-resident library card in other countries, Orange County Library in FL offers them to people outside the US. Orrange County is the most expensive though. Queens Library in New York offers the same, for a billion times cheaper price but not a lot of foreign language books. Almost everything I've seen from both libraries is in English but that could be because of my settings! I'll let my FL library subscription expire because I've found a better library. Ohio Digital Library has far far more books for a fraction of the price. I rarely buy books these days so this works but the Ohio one is only for US Folks I believe.

weirdwriter,

@EllieK @ShaulaEvans @audiobooks Yes authors and narrators get paid from libraries.

I am sharing a classic in the audio fiction community. This podcast is an entire show about superheros in therapy. The episodes have transcripts as well! I encourage you to listen to all of the seasons. The podcast was made before the books were written. The Bright Sessions https://www.thebrightsessions.com/listen @AudioFiction

It looks like I need to find a new windows client for Mastodon. I keep running into issues with Tweesecake not updating my bookmarks and favorites buffers. I had thought this was fixed, however, it's happening again. Could anyone make some good suggestions for accessible windows Mastodon clients? Invisible interface is a plus but not necessary.

weirdwriter,

@amorphisbear @objectinspace Semaphore, @semaphore is a very accessible web client.

I just enabled Block direct messages from people you don't follow checkbox in notifications settings again due to the Mastodon.social spam but I’m happy to report that if I DM you first, that’s kind of like telling the software that I consent to this conversation, and the other user can reply to my direct message without me having to follow them. This is actually really great design! I really like it this way. #FediTips

Never thought I'd have to basically predict walled gardens and preemptively crack DRM on a podcast, but I managed to get the Two Princes out of Spotify before the exclusive for listening in another app/player. I basically consider all Spotify exclusive podcasts to be DRM. Yes, I know it's not exactly the same but the fact I have to fight just to enjoy them in a non shit app makes me beyond sad! https://gimletmedia.com/shows/the-two-princes #Podcasts #Spotify #Enshitification

    Hey @atomicpoet see above. Boost?

    weirdwriter,

@talon Oh don't get me wrong, it's not perfect by any means, but I hope they realize that they shouldn't just wait for folks like us to yell at them. At least GTS is being far more proactive about it.

    atomicpoet, to fediverse

All those tech bros and press and influencers thought they could dismiss the Fediverse because #Mastodon is “hard” and doesn’t have quoted posts.

They think with a little Silicon Valley money and magic they can beat us.

Well, everyone in the NBA thought they could beat the Bulls until Dennis Rodman joined the team. We know how that went.

#Calckey is the Dennis Rodman of the Fediverse.

    weirdwriter,

@jo @atomicpoet If you have minorities forefront of your design and community moderation, you’ll get more adoption. There is nothing you can do about keeping all the influencers away. You just have to make communities that serve everybody.

    weirdwriter,

@changeling Yup! I applied but I’m opting to keep my Lifeline provider, life wireless because they automatically recertify me evrey year which is nice. Easy Wireless has an inaccessible form! I really wish Blind Shell would have partnered with a different provider. @devinprater

The only, the only, thing keeping me on instead of moving to full time is a way to quickly, and easily, edit posts in bulk without navigating through all their contents. I get it. MicroBlog was never supposed to be a long form CMS blogging platform, but like, it has so, so, so, so, many other good things and plus, it has fully managed hosting! If someone could make a web/windows site that interfaces with MicroPub tech like a classic CMS, they would have a goldmine on their hands.

    noahcarver, to accessibility

Heyah, #BlindMastodon / #BlindFedi hivemind. Does anyone know how the #accessibility / #a11y of #calckey stands right now? Its features look promising and I'm becoming interested as I read more, but I'd rather not jump into a place where there's not good #ScreenReader accessibility and #KeyboardNavigation yet either from the web UI or from third-party apps. Any and all thoughts welcome. Thanks.

    CC @calckey @kainoa @freeplay

    weirdwriter,

@noahcarver @kainoa @calckey @freeplay There is an official IOS app but I haven’t tried it yet. When I tried exploring a few instances, there wasn’t any keyboard support, and there wasn’t any labeled reaction buttons. Many instances use that awful HCaptcha so i don’t know if it is baked into core but it wasn’t really promising when I checked it out with NVDA. It’s good to see the replies above this post, maybe there is hope, but my first impressions were not good so I hope they take accessibility more proactively instead of retroactively

    weirdwriter,

@kainoa @noahcarver @calckey @freeplay You are right. No app yet that was Friendica
