This looks quite 'interesting' for Friday/Saturday this weekend....
Might nip out to see any aurora, I won't go far just in case the car won't start afterwards 😂

An old photo from the 1950s of an unguarded railway crossing in Washington NE England. Brought nearly up to date courtesy of Google Streetmap and GIMP.
(The bus which stopped outside my house in the 1960s used to terminate here :) )
Brady Square in Washington (Now Tyne and Wear)

Then vs Now :

The historical photo was taken in 1928 from Svalbard, between Norway and the North Pole. The newer photo was taken in 2002.

The newer webdev generation apparently has no idea what FTP clients were good for 😂

@campuscodi in the mid 2000's I had to explain to a bunch of devs how to use ftp...
Down as far as 'when it asks for your username... type your username in.
They then asked what to do when asked for their password..

Imagine the fun I had with trying to explain binary uploads ;)

Then and now.
An old 1950s (?) image of Cleobury Mortimer in Shropshire brought up to date with the equivalent view in 2023.
I was able to find almost the exact spot where the original was taken from which meant it was fairly straightforward to combine the 2 images in GIMP.

Hopefully not too long until the sun's out and it warms up a bit.
We potentially have a few agricultural trials to visit and document.

welp, how'd i get into THIS situation? let's rewind...

uk_csi,
@uk_csi@mstdn.social avatar

@tubetime I recently did some work on an ancient SCO server that a company was running their ENTIRE BUSINESS on! They had files in the log from at least 1998...
They had a Y2K 'fix' in their ancient software that deducted something like 25 years from the date, did the maths, then added the years back onto the result.
They want to keep on using it, but the S/W company told them that in 2025, it's just not going to work anymore!
Can't come a moment too soon!

@tubetime
On the SunOS/Solaris CAD systems I was responsible for, we used to set the 1st external drive as the boot device, and load the CAD software on it, using the internal disk drive for home areas and storage.
it made updating the OS and S/W a breeze by simply swapping the external drive.
We used to 'upgrade' the OS and software when the users were on a coffee break
