We need a word, short phrase, acronym, or perhaps ideally an otherwise semantically null emoji to indicate that you are aware of, and have taken into consideration, the crimes, misdeeds or personal failings of an artist or other creative figure and have decided to continue enjoying or appreciating that person's creative work, perhaps by way of a postmodern view centering artistic meaning in the act of interpretation rather than creation.

I suggest 🤹🏾‍♂️ unless that already means something kinky.

@mrcompletely Where are we with John Phillips 🤹🏾‍♂️?

The sublime Courtenay Pollock, who essentially invented tie dye as a western art form (as opposed to a craft, or the many advanced cloth dyeing forms in other cultures) keeps posting shirts and tapestries on his site ten or twenty at a time, and the latest batch includes this XXL stunner I'd buy in a hot second if it was my size. His work is more expensive than craft dye but cheap compared to cutting edge modern dye artists (some of whom are brilliant)

@mrcompletely Still amazes me that you can buy a relatively inexpensive original piece of art from the guy who invented/popularized the form. Props to the Deadcast for making me aware of his online shop. I snagged a tee in a hot minute and they really do look excellent in the flesh.

HiFi culture is a scam.

Corduroys are the ultimate trouser.

Billy Strings is an industry plant.

Been a fun , friends.

While this band is extremely solid, I had no idea that market demand for Khruangbin was high enough to warrant a Mr. Pibb Khruangbin. https://youtu.be/RBKle48-eAE?si=oS7Lrlbdgll_uQZJ

@mrcompletely I’ll dig it as an opener or something not to be taken too seriously but headlining festivals and multiple nights at Red Rocks? GTFO!

@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@richkny @wobs @mrcompletely @thesizzler And yet, nobody wants to address the heat of the meat, which is that we have a goddang mirror mirror Khruangbin. Just seems weird, y’all.

Looking to repurpose this image from a 1939 Nat Geo but the only version online (that I can find) is a bit too low-res. Anyone know of a secret repository of NG images dating back to this era? Easy alternative is to buy a physical copy of the back issue and scan it myself - those seem readily available. #photography

An AI upscaling tool is also an alternative but finding quality among the dreck is a real crapshoot. Curious if anyone has first-hand experience with a good one.

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Yep, them doots are the queen bee in my bonnet. But in general, are the PS AI tools pretty solid?

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@PaulInRainCity Welp, this is impressively comprehensive but dear lord, image capture technology has come a long way since the late 90s!

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I find that I use image generators just infrequently enough (maybe once every 2-3 months) that I'm pretty blown away at the rate of improvement. Firefly would probably fry my brain.

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @PaulInRainCity Unfortunately not. Might have to hunt down a print copy.

So what’s an appropriate level of concern regarding this Russian space nuke situation? #spacenukes

@mrcompletely didn’t have Russian space nukes on your bingo card? Get your affairs in order, bud.

If these notes about the difference between a bunch of jams and an album seem harsh, please answer the question: is this band better than Miles Davis' bands in 1968-69? No?

Then fucking edit your jams. He did.

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Man, I’m worn out with bands doing the improvised electric Miles bit. Those live jams were mapped out for good reason.

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I really like that model. In my experience, bands have a very hard time hearing their own output from the listener’s PoV, which handicaps their ability to trim the fat. Listeners don’t care how you got there, they just want the goods. If a band can turn that corner (many can’t), the impact on the quality of the music is immediate.

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Glad to hear it! And that’s exactly why those unedited/full-length jams should be pay-what-you-want.

Any other enthusiasts and middle-aged jazzbos for whom The Smile does nothing? On paper, this band is everything I desire - in practice, I feel deeply unsatisfied.

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I feel this. My tolerance for Yorke’s vocals has worn pretty thin and they’re way more prominent than they need to be for this project. As with RH, I wish the band would just jam for the love of god - with Skinner they clearly have the means to do it.

"Mwandishi-esque" #jazz YT playlist

This playlist was made by posing the question "what other #music actually sounds right when mixed with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi albums?" back on the birdsite. @theheatwarps was a major contributor to the discussion. Alice Coltrane is the other major pillar here.

As always, suggestions for additional tracks are always welcome, but whether or not I feel the fit is right or not is a visceral and elusive thing

theheatwarps,
@theheatwarps@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely IIRC, we also had a surprisingly long thread of every album the core Mwandishi band performed on. Deleting that post along with my account broke my damn heart.

Second Bandcamp playlist from night 2 of the streaming event. This one is 100% for people on psychedelics. Shoutout to the Prairiewolf homies, that track kills. And check out @spacefuzz - two tracks here, from one of the year's best albums imo - you should 100% buy that shit

I'll have at least one more of these later #music #jazz #hiphop #psychedelic

Weird twist on an old favorite: a STEREO version of Phil Spector’s Christmas Album! Despite the “Authentic Mono” label, this late 70s reissue features the entire orchestra in the left channel, with vocals, odd percussion and sound effects in the right. Disorienting as heck. Bonus: a dead-eyed, truly terrifying Spector dressed as the fat man on the sleeve.

Zonked Spector as Santa.
Deceptive marketing on the sleeve.
