Although I have a compatible watch, I can’t update because my iPhone 8 cannot run iOS 17. Just get a message that your phone needs to be updated before your watch can. Which really means “You need to buy a new phone if you want to update your watch, even though your current phone runs fine”. Pretty shitty.

What should I do with my old iPhone XR?

I just upgraded to a 13, but the trade-in was only $80 and I thought I might find something better to do with it than just get $80 back, so I’d love suggestions. Remember, it doesn’t have cellular access anymore, just wifi. Does anyone have any good ideas for what to do with it? A friend suggested a dedicated GPS for my car,...

Do you cook? I use my old iPhone to view recipes in the kitchen. It’s attached to the backsplash with Velcro. It is always plugged into a charger, but it is connected to a smart switch (already had set my house up). Set a shortcut to turn on the charger when the battery is 20% and to turn off the charger when it is 80% so as to get the best battery life.

Rental companies should try putting some stickers inside the vehicle which indicate where the manual door release is. It wouldn’t cost much and would at least save people unfamiliar with Teslas from getting trapped like this.

It kind of makes sense. I wonder if customers who only want a telephone line will be forced to sign up for an internet package anyway? Sure, there probably aren’t so many people. But still worth thinking about.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

That’s sucks. I’m not from the UK but isn’t there already a line rental fee she has to pay monthly or yearly? Is the “upgrade” more expensive overall?

Seems maybe a mobile phone is a better solution. At least they still work if the power is out (not if it kills the cell network too of course).

But your mum would have to change her phone number and learn a new device. And remember to charge it.

I remember getting my grandma a mobile phone for emergencies (Nokia 3310) and it was so hard for her to grasp how to use it.

th3dogcow,

Wow that really sucks.

Buttery smooth on iPhone 8 here. Thanks so much. The overlay to denote a web link is appearing in random positions in compact mode though. I already sent a report through TestFlight which has screenshots.

The sample size for responses was just under 1,200 people. I hardly think that it is a good representation of the population. Half of the responses were from SMS, and the other half from robocalls. I would wager that the people who would respond to those would also be older, and adverse to technology.

I’m all for the assimilation of services and card into the my number card. I do think the major flaw is that the number is physically printed on the card. It should have been made accessible only digitally after entering a PIN. This is why people, including myself, hesitate to carry it in their wallet (and why it comes in a stupid plastic sleeve).

I hope by the deadline 100% of medical institutions have the hardware to read the cards. Also, I wish more medical institutions would accept cashless payments. I guess this depends where you live, but unless it is a big hospital, medical institutions in my area only accept cash.

I’m not able to see any posts in subscribed, but all and local work (lemm.ee and world). Other apps are showing the subscribed feed ok. Hmmm

Convenience stores and even ¥100 shops sell chargers. The ones at the ¥100 shop are about ¥770 for USB C (less for A), and the ones at the convenience stores are twice the price or more. Most stations also offer portable charger rentals, too.

When I first moved here, I brought a power strip from my home country and just used that with an adapter. It worked well but YMMV.

Hope you have a great trip anyway.

I like to keep everything on one page. Also, I am an app hoarder. Each folder has multiple pages, grouped together. Some icons are shortcuts which bring up a list of related apps. It looks like a lot but it works for me lol.

Cool. Look forward to checking it out. Thanks!

It is finally usable now. Thank you. But, it still looks a bit cut off? I’ll post a screenshot:

In-laws got covid. Staying away as much as possible, whilst being supportive.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

That’s all very well, but in some regions like Australia, Disney has or has announced the end of DVD and Blu-ray sales, which sucks.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

That’s smart! Just realise that you don’t actually own anything though, just license it. Which for the most part is the same. However, sometimes things like background music get changed due to licensing fees. So, for example , Scrubs (tv show) dvd is far superior to what you can purchase for streaming.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

Probably not. To be honest, I’m a prime member for the photo storage. After google photos stopped their free tier, I looked for the cheapest cloud offering. Prime Japan was the cheapest. Shipping and music etc are just gravy for me.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

Ah prime video is a doozy. Unless it is Amazon original, it will list the Japanese dub and the English original as separate videos. Of course, Japanese content is only in Japanese, but you can watch a lot of English content (the whole or most of the 007 franchise for example).

Most is tethered, so requires a PC to rejailbreak after reboot. Not ideal for a main device.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

Data, yes. Apps which no longer exist on the AppStore, no. Apps are not migrated device to device. The new device is just directed to download the apps fresh from the AppStore.

th3dogcow,
@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

No, you cannot. I have multiple devices. I cannot download it on the devices which don’t have it, even if I go through my previous downloads.

I just double checked, and it doesn’t even show up under purchases.

@th3dogcow@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah no worries! You tried to help, which I appreciate! Thanks you.
