If the Washington Post hadn’t tried to suddenly QUADRUPLE their digital subscription price after years of being a reasonable $4 a month, I wouldn’t have canceled my subscription and they would have continued collecting that small but steady fee from me. But tbh, now my attitude is fuck them.

@Green_Footballs at least they let you cancel without talking to a human. Reminds me I need to call Bloomberg 🤬

Use Apple Music.app on your Mac?

Here's an easy way to add all the SomaFM channels at once:

Go into Music.app, and Cmd-U (File -> Open Stream URL) and paste in:

http://somafm.com/all.m3u

This will add all the SomaFM channels to a playlist called "SomaFM". (It also seems to put them in another playlist called "Internet Songs" but you can delete them from there with no problem.)

@somafm seems to work — will it also get graphics from the site? It’s been a loooong time since I looked at an m3u file…

I don’t see an Internet Songs playlist, so that’s cool.

Continue to be uniquely disturbed by how many ppl judge their DNS provider based on the aesthetics of the user interface and marketing collateral.

@brianleroux wait until you find out about cars 🤓

React stans are exhausting.

swart,
@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@brianleroux I still use it every day and I can confirm it’s exhausting

swart,
@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@brianleroux I tried migrating to Swift but it’s even churnier. Problem is I’m using html for things it was never intended

swart,
@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@brianleroux I should pay more attention to these things. What did you like about it?

swart,
@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@brianleroux I was playing with SwiftUI because it seems like a pretty decent component based UI builder, but I ran up against the edges fairly quickly once I started trying to send notifications around the component tree (same thing I constantly fight against in React). As long as you’re building the stuff they’ve anticipated it’s great.

Nice portrait of @internetarchive and me:

“Pick a BIG project that you won’t finish, that lasts beyond your lifetime.” Brewster Kahle expanded on the thought with a reference to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick...

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive I’m intrigued by that church. I need to concoct a reason to go back down to the Bay Area.

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive we also have many friends there. It’s a magical place.

They’re actually very useful.

Here’s one that’s a hundred hours long.

I see it like this: no one bats an eye if you build an event system where objects sign up for what they care about. If you care about foo, you subscribe(foo) and if you don't care, you don't.

What I have here is a scheme where if you care about interact_with_saucer you implement interact_with_saucer, and if you don't care, you don't implement it.

swart,
@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@RonJeffries reminds me of the way people used to implement is* methods in Smalltalk. For example the default implementation of isRhinoceros on Object would return false, but if you had a class that was actually a rhinoceros, well you were free to override appropriately. This general approach fell out of favor but I never found it difficult to manage, as long as there was a way to extend the methods on base classes without breaking the system, and generally there was.

@Green_Footballs my first exposure to them was their 1978 greatest hits album. No idea why I bought it, I used to hang out in the record store and it probably caught my eye. Listened to the hell out of it but I had never heard their music before. Made me a lifelong fan even though I never bought a “real” studio album
