I saw a florid, cursive-y car decal that’s living rent-free in my mind. It said, “stay alive, don’t text and drive.” What makes this notable wasn’t the sentiment, valid though it was. It was the fact that it was ON THE BACK OF A HEARSE.
There was a short but explosive cloudburst that walked through last night while I was at dinner. I came home to find my pool furniture had been rather precariously rearranged by the wind.
For the first time in a very long time I was able to celebrate my birthday with my friends!! Orangetheory with the crew this morning (working out with a crown and sash is hard!) and dinner with my boyfriend at a winery tonight. A rainbow capped off the day. I loved every minute working at Apple, but celebrating today without the overtones of the conference was really special.
I just finished my 20th book of 2024. Based on my book journal, the highest rated book of the year so far, with a very rare 5/5, is Shark Heart. Oh heavens did I love that book. https://www.emilyhabeck.com/shark-heart-novel

But seriously if you have such bad taste that you’re practically illiterate, you shouldn’t be allowed to contribute.
Tonight at my nail salon, the young woman next to me had a medical emergency. The swiftness and fury with which this room of all women, presumably at least some mothers based on age, leapt into action to support her was astonishing. Women are incredibly badass, and women collectively going into “protection” mode is a force of nature.
I spend a lot of time reassuring my aging self that I’m still hip and cool. Then today, upon encountering some sort of music festival, I asked the security guard, “what’s that hootenanny over yonder?” One might conclude that not only am I no longer hip and cool, I was NEVER hip and cool.
The Husbands by Holly Gramazio was an interesting read. The writer writes for video games, which I could sort of feel (in a good way.) It got a little repetitive and one note… maybe would have really shined as a novella? But it was new and different and creative!
Remember that scene in Lost where Sawyer is annoyed by a super loud frog, and he enlists Hurley to help hunt it down. Then he smashes it with his bare hands while Hurley looks on, aghast? Having been woken up at 4:28am by a toad outside my window that sounded JUST like a ringing phone… I’m on Sawyer’s side.
