Rapper Meek Mill is wondering out loud if Africans have access to streaming music apps like Spotify, and if so, if they listen to his music.

There aren't enough stories about the Africans working at big tech companies, but there are a lot of us. There are many Ghanaians, South Africans, Kenyans, and Nigerians 🙋🏿‍♂️, working in tech.

I often remind folks that Nigerian 7th grade math curriculum includes binary, octal, hexadecimal, statistics and data, algebra, and geometry.

@mekkaokereke I agree that it's surprising that American math standards don't cover binary numbers. It is especially weird to me given the outsized role that tech tycoons play in the education system. The Bill Gates foundation was part of the push for common core but common core doesn't include binary numbers. Groups like code.org have changed legislation in basically every state but inexplicably it never occurred to them to make binary numbers part of elementary math.

@brinnbelyea @mekkaokereke If it makes you feel any better, it's not unusual for me to have to teach math concepts in college physics classes. During the pandemic I did that a lot but I think the students now have a better foundation in math than they did 2-3 years ago.

Edwin Hubble announced #OTD in 1925 that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were in fact separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell.

The Universe was far larger than what many astronomers had allowed themselves to imagine. It was more than just our little island of stars.

Hubble built on observations by Vesto Slipher, collaborated with Milton Humason, and relied on Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s Cepheid variable work to reach this conclusion.

Based on this, it really seems like if you want to use a mainstream music streaming service and support artists, you should use Apple Music. They are second, only behind Tidal, in the amount they pay per stream, and pay more than double what Spotify does.

A million streams on Apple Music is $8000 versus $3200 on Spotify.
