Hm.

So my cell provider has no good plan for roaming to Europe. So the last time I was in France, I got a local phone number and a SIM card so I could use Internet while I was there. It was a bit of a pain to get the SIM so I put it somewhere I'd be able to find it* when I next needed it.

Now I can't find it.

Can anyone think of a way to get a French cell phone SIM either without leaving Toronto, or without leaving Charles De Gaulle?

  • Probably in that one purse I threw away a few years ago.

@mcc If your phone supports it, e-sims are a good way to get data for short term travel these days.

@Viss Yep, but also accountable for not empowering them. I often think about Meta's CISO who can only report to the board via in-house council - ensuring deniability/non-discoverability of any advice/warnings given to the board.

I spent the day at a fun tech conference. However I seem to be the only person there who doubts the future of AI - and specifically of large language models. Sigh, I'm off to my pillar/cave in the desert.

I'm back from a fun few days at #emf2024 - great vibe, ran into old friends, made new ones, and learned some random stuff (like the previous retoot about timezones on the London underground) .

Most of (all?) the hacks were funny and had a physical manifestation - not purely software. Also quite a retro feel to a lot of it - Fax machines etc but also robots/droids everywhere!

#EMF is a festival with power, ethernet and phone connections to the tent if you want it. Full coverage of the site with wifi, DECT (!?!) and GSM.

I decided to travel relatively light this time, bringing a foldable 30w solar panel an iPad + android phone. It worked (just).

I did bring a self winding watch and a paper train ticket so I could get home even if I had failed!

Our voice phone systems are seamlessly federated. You can call people across carriers, over national boundaries, instantaneously, and the only friction is slightly more numbers to dial.

@evan oh, ho, but just you try and join that club now...

You'll need spectrum, and an operating license from a member state of the ITU - which only accepts membership from full UN members.

Google's adoption of hallucinating LLMs isn't as surprising to them as it is to us.

Sure, Google started out trying to be accurate and factual, but pretty rapidly the ad side took over so internally they have been living with statistics (at best), half truths and lies for long enough to be comfortable with them.

@ewjoachim @mrchrisadams I'm using safari for Facebook, Mastodon and a couple of others. - it is pretty easy to do and works ok.
(Click the Share button in the toolbar, then choose Add to Dock.

@ewjoachim @mrchrisadams If the link is to the same site it stays in the mastodon window, if it is a different site it opens in my default browser (which is safari but doesn't have to be).

Which is kinda what I want almost all the time.

I don't find myself copying links about, but your expectations might be different from mine.

@ewjoachim @mrchrisadams my mental model is that this is a mastodon app that happens to be a website - anything outside the app should open in the browser (or whatever the opener is for that URI scheme). Which I guess is different from your model ?

Ok. So. First post on Mastadon so bear with me…first time at , also first time camping with a 6 year old… I’ve read the info on the site, can anyone weigh in with random one-liner bits of advice? It may also be helpful other emf newbies?

Don't stress if you miss something, you were probably having fun elsewhere (or having a much needed rest).

Have fun and keep your eyes open for (edit) mechanical oddities

(perhaps bring an old DECT phone and sharpie the number on the 6 year old ? Mobiles don't work that well and it is easy to get lost).

Time passed and we drifted apart, I worked on other stuff, some of which I'm quite proud of, with other great teams, but I think that project is the best thing I did (so far at least).

Graham emailed me last week to pass on the sad news that Eli died.

Eli - you were a great mentor, manager and friend. At the time I didn’t know how lucky I was that you took a chance on me. I do now. Thanks and rest in peace.
