Upgrade experience 23.11 ➡️ 24.05 setup from https://github.com/novoid/nixos-config

qemu VM: ran for 6 minutes, no hazzle.

floyd (lenovo x260, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD): programs.gnupg.agent.pinentryFlavor now works different. Easy to fix.
Update took 2 hours(!) and +20GB data

jackson (lenovo t490, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD): virt-manager-qt doesn't compile but it never worked anyway, so I removed it. Took 7 minutes and used +18GB data.

So it went more or less fine but you need time + large storage meda for Nix.

@nebucatnetzer Yes, that is a question that bugs me as well. Furthermore, the subjective speed is really bad and AFAIR this was not an issue while I was running Xubuntu. Unfortunately, I don't have objective performance measurements from back then.

My guess is the limited bandwidth to the SATA SSD in contrast to the M.2 slots on the other machines.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@nebucatnetzer However, the setup is very similar to the jackson host which didn't take so long. If it's the culprit, there aren't that many packages that can be the reason.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@nebucatnetzer Not that I'm aware of or know, what this is.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@nebucatnetzer Oh, thanks for looking into that issue. 🙇

I have no idea to do that and most likely I'll reinstall floyd with Debian in the upcoming months. I'm not sure when I've got a weekend to reinstall jackson as it will take much more effort to switch that host. 😞

Sharing Selected #Orgmode Data With #Logseq Users

I do have a special use-case for sharing parts of my Org-mode content with my wife.

(Help me to promote me #Emacs content elsewhere since I no longer promote it outside of Mastodon: https://karl-voit.at/2024/05/23/leaving-reddit/ )

@AAMfP If you think that I have some content that is of value, sure, link it. No need for asking as I've published it to be found and read.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@AAMfP Nice webpage!

I stumbled over https://marcoxbresciani.codeberg.page/emacs/orgmode/orgmode.html and immediately had that issue with #Orgmode as markup and Orgmode as Elisp code.

I'd recommend you to read https://karl-voit.at/2021/11/27/orgdown/ as I've proposed a solution to that problem. I have to admit that this is not a successful idea but it gets the job done, IMHO.

YMMV

@AAMfP Furthermore, I'd not say that Markdown definitions are bloated in contrast to Orgdown. Quite the contrary since in the basic Markdown definitions, there are no tables, blocks, properties and many many more syntax elements orgdown knows.

@Zabuzzman You actually started with Emacs as your first editor? 😲

@Zabuzzman 🤔 Hm, possible.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_%28email_client%29 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe%27s_Own_Editor I can not tell.

The first mentions:
"its message editor inspired the text editor Pico." ... which would indicate that Pico is not the editor of Pine.

totoroot, to NixOS

Can someone please help me debug on 🙏

I think it has worked at some point, but, to be honest, I am not sure as I usually just use sleep.
I would now like to set up hybrid sleep, but for that I first need to get hibernation working once and for all

Current state is that it neither works on my work machine (a Dell Latitude 7440), nor on my private notebook (a Lenovo Thinkpad T470).

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@totoroot You need swap partitions with equal or bigger size than RAM.

Those partitions need to be available early in the boot process.

Checked that already?

I actually don't know how to send PGP encrypted emails. Looked at a guide for thunderbird, I do not have enough mental capital for that rn.

A interesting organization asked for emails to be encrypted, and I am not even going to write them 😢

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@douginamug What's the issue?

TB has its own OpenPGP implementation. Did you create your keys within TB? Did you import your old key pairs into TB?

After that, it should be easy peasy.
