Yet again I am on high latency, low-bandwidth hotel WiFi and am thankful for teams that prioritise web performance

There's a large overlap between the sustainable web and web performance, so I wrote "5 tips for creating speedier, more sustainable websites with Fastly": https://www.fastly.com/blog/5-tips-for-creating-speedier-more-sustainable-websites-with-fastly

What's a good way to learn about modern CSS, if I haven't paid attention to it for the last decade? #web #css

Oh no, today I had to care about compiler name mangling. Naming things is hard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_mangling

I finally figured out how to calculate my "Uncompressed JavaScript bytes per character" web performance metric in an easy way: WebPageTest results include the amount of JavaScript and the rendered HTML for the page, so I built a small page in Glitch to work it out: https://javascript-bytes-per-character.glitch.me/
e.g.:
According to this WebPageTest run, https://www.javascript.com/ requires 2,609,038 bytes of JavaScript to show 2,003 characters of text on the page. That's 1,302.6 JavaScript bytes per character.

I love that we can keep building better JPEG encoders without having to upgrade any existing decoders: https://opensource.googleblog.com/2024/04/introducing-jpegli-new-jpeg-coding-library.html #webPerf

I’m so annoyed that my children have to learn the imperial system at school. Who cares how many useless units are in a kilogram?

I'm most definitely a prompt engineer! I engineered my prompt to look like this in my home directory:

I remember seeing a magazine page from decades ago with someone covered in weird computer gear, perhaps something like Wired?, but I can’t find it again. Does anyone know the image I mean or have tips on how to find it?

I wanted to make a quick doodle, export it as SVG, import it into PrusaSlicer and 3D print it. Instead, I'm investigating SVG bugs, sigh. For some reason, the bottom of the cone is instead rendered as a rectangle:

A sketch of a cute ice cream cone, but for some reason, the cone is glitched into a rectangle

I love #RSS. My RSS feed reader is the page I visit most on web, I think. So it's very frustrating when folks update their site, but don't redirect their RSS feed - please remember to do it, people.

@kev It’s also annoying when RSS entries have a title but no content

I've used it for decades, but I can't for the life of me remember the magic incantation to redirect stderr to stdout. Perhaps if I think of 2>&1 as an emoticon? Some sort of hat on a snake/duck?

I've been trying to get into Halt and Catch Fire, three episodes in to series one and not enjoying it at all. Is it likely to grow on me or should I give up?

This syllabus around it looks awesome, but just not finding anything for me in the actual episodes so far..

Changing time twice a year for daylight savings is silly. In the UK the clocks go back 1 hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October. That’s today. First bug so far: Riverford, my weekly fruit and vegetable delivery service, charged me at 1:29 and then an hour later at 1:28. Will I receive twice as many veggies?

Is there a performance benchmark that compares bundled vs unbundled loading time across browsers?

orangeacme,
@orangeacme@fosstodon.org avatar

@pepicrft @odddev Yes, but it depends ;-) Best way to find out what is actually happening is to use the browser developer tools, eg https://developer.chrome.com/docs/devtools/network/ or a tool like https://www.webpagetest.org

orangeacme,
@orangeacme@fosstodon.org avatar

@odddev @pepicrft Bundling small, critical content into the initial HTML response can help, but only sometimes…

orangeacme,
@orangeacme@fosstodon.org avatar

@odddev Sure!
