What is a good name for the inevitability that, in every field of inquiry, someone will eventually try to turn it into a theory of everything?

Maybe the Freemasonry Principle? Or the Law of Disciplinary Hubris?

I have often blamed venture capital for the problems of tech. But what if the exits VCs were after were ? Could VC be redeemed? Let's go upstream to the source.

What is your search engine for scholarly publications?

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@kbbeen Mostly Google Scholar, integrated with my school's library. But I want to try something new.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@robin that's what I'm hoping for. And preferably one provided by an organization that is not actively exploiting scholars for free labor and libraries for exorbitant subscription fees.

Look, I know the only good car is a bike.

But after having to use a gas-car for a week, getting back in our electric came as such a relief. Even our low-end Leaf drives so much smoother and more responsively than any gas-car I've driven. It is weird to me that so many people who could do otherwise still stick with gas.

I just used AI for drafting text for the first time (successfully at least), but it is for an AI company so they get what they deserve.

The future of democracy doesn't lie just with Trump or Biden—it begins, I argue, in our everyday organizational lives, which we now live largely online: https://theconversation.com/why-the-future-of-democracy-could-depend-on-your-group-chats-229597

I know $12 USD is a lot of money for some people, so to celebrate 1000+ sales (!!!), I'm giving away 1000 PDF copies of How Git Works (honour system: only if $12 is a lot for you!)

Here's the link, enter code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free copy https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

(it'll ask you for a billing address but you can enter a fake address if you'd prefer)

The glory of Open Educational Resources! A new edition of the textbook I use in my Intro to Social Media course is now out—and with a new chapter from me on "regulation," as well as an invitation to shared governance. https://opentextbooks.library.arizona.edu/humansrsocialmedia/

Giving up on all the fancy stuff and just transitioned my newsletter back to a simple Mailman operation. There's a form at the bottom of my website: https://nathanschneider.info/

Bye, bye, tracking and formatting.

@harryfk @astrojuanlu @nemobis @mayfirst oh drat. I thought I was being clever copying that token over! I wonder if it would work without the token... Or is there another best practice for embedding a Mailmain subscription form off-site? I just reverted to the link for now.

@light oh, maybe I need to update that? I set it up pretty early on. Is that the problem?

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@light thanks for explaining this. On the app GUI they only offer the plc option. I can understand it as an attempt to walk the line between laying decentralized groundwork but also making the onramps as accessible as possible.

I learned a lot from this great talk by Glen Coulthard on third-fourth-world solidarity: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/ideas/dene-self-determination-glen-coulthard-1.7208086?s=09

The role of Israel-Palestine conflict in shaping the 1970s stuggles—what a rhyme.

Thanks to @Matt_Noyes and @geosocialcoop for this fabulous interview with Brazilian philosopher Euclides Mance on liberation theology, solidarity economy, and the perils of switching from PHP to Java. This is a great gift to us mono-lingual English speakers.
