You will find me obsessed about CryptPad for a few days. I am at DebCamp trying to evaluate the feasibility of packaging CryptPad for Debian and bringing it into FreedomBox.

Gradual Measures Won’t Save Us From Climate Disaster

https://jacobin.com/2023/08/climate-change-carbon-emissions-gradualism-crisis/

> The planet does not care about the annual rate of emissions (the flow); what matters is the accumulated stock of carbon in the atmosphere — that’s what governs the degree of warming.

People don't like being told that, in their high paying jobs for multinational corporations, they're actively lending their talents to those actively making the world a worse place. And yet, undeniably, that is why many of us are doing.

'What's the alternative?' some might ask.

Resign. Take a lower paying job working for a small local business or charitable foundation. Start your own of either. Aim for sustainability. There are many benefits (I have experienced most of those permutations).

njoseph,
@njoseph@social.masto.host avatar

@lightweight
Unfortunately, under global capitalism, there is ample opportunity to make the world worse while doing a low-paying job for a local business. It's hard to understand the tangled web of global capital. You might just end up adding more layers in between yourself and the sources of money.

Same goes for non-profits. Wikipedia and Mozilla are one layer removed from Google money.

Has anyone started to use this self-hosting #server? #FreedomBox

https://freedombox.org/

"Run your digital services from your home

FreedomBox is a private server for non-experts: it lets you install and configure server applications with only a few clicks. It runs on cheap hardware of your choice, uses your internet connection and power, and is under your control"

njoseph,
@njoseph@social.masto.host avatar

@morgandawn @tobi Yes.

#FreedomBox was used to set up digital services in remote rural areas with no good Internet connectivity. You can read the documentation about FreedomBox community deployments in this wiki book.
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/FreedomBox_for_Communities

When FreedomBox was deployed in villages in India, it was configured to be the DHCP server connected to several Wi-Fi access points spread throughout the village.

If you have a specific use case in mind, please discuss it on the forum.

For me, the most fantastic thing in sci-fi such as Star Trek will always be people being convinced by logic and reason, then acting based on the new information.

We don't generally see this in real life.

Our mines are a sarcophagus for our civilization. As we build our shining city on hill, we refuse to look down and see the devastating deep hole we are digging for ourselves, destroying the air, soil and water, heating up and toxifying everything. Enough with the lies about being green and clean and net zero and renewable. Can we not at least for once face the truth of who we are as a species. We are a wrecker of worlds.

We must stop digging.

We must stop consuming.

We must stop devouring.

@gerrymcgovern The species was doing fine until European colonialism, the concept of chartered corporations and a growth-based economy started in the 14th century.

Generative AI has changed programming indeed.

My code is now "artisanal", "hand-crafted" and "untouched by machine". It should be classified as art. ✨

I am classified as a code chef now since I don't use Microsoft GitHub Copilot. I will produce tiny amounts of neat code in a large amount of time and charge you $1000 for each sample*.

I don't need Twitter for rage. Just reading the Pluralistic blog can fill me with various levels of rage against whatever messed-up system we are living in.

Yesterday's post about techno-feudalism hits me hard, as someone who is 1) absolutely dependent on the tech industry to make a living and 2) tries to contribute to technology solutions made for self-determination and against digital colonialism.

Has anybody done a roundup of the current state of Mastodon clients? I'm especially interested in:

  • Can it collapse notifications, e.g. if I post a thread of N toots and M people like each toot, I do not want M × N notifications.
  • Can it automatically fetch replies and stats when I view a toot, rather than force me to go to a browser?
  • Can it automatically show me somebody's toots when I view their profile if I don't already follow them?
njoseph,
@njoseph@social.masto.host avatar

@nettles
Fedilab can do all those things.

When working as a programmer under capitalism, it becomes less and less valuable for your employer to allow you to write code as you increase in seniority.

To keep your skills sharp and not completely lose the joy of programming, some kind of programming katas are necessary. I'm thinking of doing a "Make a Lisp" project.

TIL that a typical server processor (Intel Xeon) sitting idle in a data center uses 60% of the energy that it would use at 100% load.

So, if you rewrote your Python/Ruby server application in Rust but kept the server's CPU utilization at 15%, your energy savings are negligible.
