i miss the days when most of us could agree that astronauts punching NASA conspiracists was unequivocally the best response.

As usual, I had at least two rants in this @BreakingBadness episode. It was such a fun convo with @NotTheLinux and @ColonelPanic, one of my favorites so far.

@gbhnews Somehow, I feel the Gardner museum heist wouldn't have nearly the lasting power had it been jpegs of bored primates.

The thing about Windows' "Unified AI assistant" is that we're still in the stage where Microsoft 'AI' continues to screw up Bing in tangible and observable ways.

Now they're going to package it and shove it onto local workstations - shoehorning it into critical system areas - without substantial care or study.

It's offensively bad practice. And I can't wait to see what it enables red teamers to accomplish.

I feel like Ian Malcolm in the first Jurassic Park ranting about responsible technology deployment while slamming my fist on the table, but that's where we are.

I don't hate AI.

I've actually written on the possible benefits of it.

I hate the extractive and irresponsible deployment of AI that we're seeing across the board.

Went well! Good crowd, good support, and good questions. Pulling in good feedback now.

@skry I started using protonmail this year and have been enjoying it and the related services.

ah, good, Windows is forcing an integrated AI "assistant" into Win11.

As I've said recently, more and more, Microsoft is forcing me into the arms of Apple.

did they not fucking learn from Cortana?

neurovagrant,
@neurovagrant@masto.deoan.org avatar

@leerayl @Nonya_Bidniss The difference to me is that, while Apple is certainly perfecting platform-capture rather than open options, Apple is also designing and engineering with an eye to more privacy-favoring features.

neurovagrant,
@neurovagrant@masto.deoan.org avatar

@echanda I've thought about moving to linux, and could definitely use more experience with it, but haven't gone that far yet.

Apple has its myriad problems, but it still serves me well for the most part.

Random interesting stumble-upon: Default mode network.

"In neuroscience, the default mode network (DMN), also known as the default network, default state network, or anatomically the medial frontoparietal network (M-FPN), is a large-scale brain network primarily composed of the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus and angular gyrus. It is best known for being active when a person is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest, such as during daydreaming and mind-wandering. It can also be active during detailed thoughts related to external task performance.[3] Other times that the DMN is active include when the individual is thinking about others, thinking about themselves, remembering the past, and planning for the future."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Default_mode_network

neurovagrant,
@neurovagrant@masto.deoan.org avatar

The interesting thing to me personally here is that autism is associated with a decrease in DMN activity, and major depressive disorder is associated with an increase.

I'd love to get some imaging done to see how that works out in me, as I have both. I sort of expect that competing area activity is at the root of a bunch of my executive dysfunction, but that's just a guess.
