I just found out one of my domain registrars, register.to, no longer exists, due to the death of it's owner earlier this year.

https://domainnamewire.com/2023/03/02/to-registry-assures-register-to-customers-that-their-domains-are-safe/

It appears their billing system is still trying to charge customers cards though.

@shawnhooper ain’t that convenient…

@grmpyprogrammer all bar 13.

I actually wrote my first (and last) paper cheque just recently 😂

@vyr I've applied your glitch-soc search PR, including this commit: https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/9/commits/2159ca83f7affe39f33af4f22654ced6a1182523 but I still get irrelevant search results.

What am I doing wrong?

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr thanks!

I'm running from this branch: https://github.com/nanos/mastodon/tree/glitch-mstdn-thms

This is where I've merged your latest commit in: https://github.com/nanos/mastodon/commit/1f62991acc25e6033c6220cf7517e39ce15fd7c8

Do I have to re-deploy the index after merging this? (I did re-deploy just before, and assumed that this didn't require a new tootctl search deploy?

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr thanks so much for that. Really appreciate that!

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr I did run tootctl search reply after merging #9. Then merged in that commit shortly after.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr sadly the answer to all 3 is no.

I’ve actually deployed twice, verified the code is there using nano, and even rebooted for good measure , because I couldn’t make sense of it 🤔

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr yea, I always found that very strange and unsatisfactorily.

Thanks, I’ll have a look at that, and let you know.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr haha, from what I can see it’s just replacing must with should, isn’t it?

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr doh. Of course 🤦‍♂️

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@vyr YES! This worked!

And searching for multiple words is also so much better - finally no longer need to search for full +text +search.

Thank you so much! You are amazing!

Personally think this is a great take on the whole #mastodon / #bluesky thing:

https://erinkissane.com/blue-skies-over-mastodon

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@prashmohan oh, I’ve not heard of that yet. The idea of user selectable algorithms sounds fantastic for people like you and me. It’ll completely overwhelm 99% of the population though 😬

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@prashmohan yes, I appreciate that.

But, given people seem to be put off mastodon because of the complexity of choosing a server, I can’t imagine what the complexity of choosing an algorithm would do to the average user.

Hmmm. My Mastodon server started incurring data transfer costs on April 24. It looks like it exceeded AWS' free tier data transfer for the month... but only shows data transfers totaling 415 GB, in+out. The free tier data transfer is 1 TB. What's going on here?

(It's not going to break the bank, but if there's a way to optimize this I'd love to give it a shot.) #AWS #MastoAdmin

A chart showing AWS data transfer costs...

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@adam welcome to the world of AWS - where no one truly understands what costs how much.

Billing console should tell you though.

My guess is that it’s the number of transactions: S3 charges for putting data into S3, for each GET request, as well as for each DELETE request.

As mastodon does a lot of those, this is what caused the vast majority of my AWS cost, when I used it for mastodon (which was the reason why I migrated to a different service)

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@adam yeah. AWS billing is notoriously opaque and complex…

You should probably look into cloudfront and other services to cache media on the edge, if you aren’t already doing so. Both to reduce cost, and increase performance.

I’m using backblaze b2. I was paying about $6 per month on S3, and went to $1 on B2.

Blog post about https://combine.social horizontal scaling coming up.

If you are running your own copy then you probably don’t care.

If you just authorized using the official server, then you probably don’t care either - it just works.

But I care.

I have enough users that I was running out of memory.

That’s the good kind of problems 😅

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@anders I’m curious: are you willing to share a ballpark figure of how many users you have?

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@anders that’s quite a nice number. I think there’s probably a similar number of users for FediFetcher, judging by number of forks+stars on GitHub, but I obviously don’t really know

Do you have any monetisation plans, if you don’t mind me asking?

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@anders I never considered that. I just assumed you’d eventually charge a fee.

It’s that which put me off from offering a hosted option: I don’t want to pay for it out of my own pocket, nor did I want to deal with payments 😁

FYI for nutmeg.social users:

I’ve received a ton of reports on the follow spam from some random “GX” forum site (you probably all know the one at this point). While I generally DM the reporter once I’ve taken action, right now there are so many that I can’t keep up with the individual “hey, I took care of it” messages.

Please keep the reports coming, unfortunately at the moment it seems like a game of whack-a-mole but I’m doing my best to keep up with the bans.

Driving through a town, and decided to get Starbucks on our way out. I was able to get gas and park the camper to do this without trouble.

This. This is yet another example of why we went small for the travel rig.

Is there any advantage hiding blocked instances from the public about page?

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@panda if you have blocked an instance because of trolling or abuse it can help reduce retaliation, if they don’t know you’ve blocked them.

michael,

@panda yes they do. Especially on the internet…

is now on v4.2.1:

New in this release, you can now fetch replies to any posts you've favourited, as suggested by @eddie

For full details, see the release page:

https://github.com/nanos/FediFetcher/releases/tag/v4.2.1

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@dmitri

It’s got something to do with how mastodon pulls in replies to posts from other servers:

If you come across a post from someone on another server, that neither you nor anyone else on your server follows, mastodon will not show you replies to that post.

This could, for example, happen, if someone you follow boosted the post, to make it appear in your home timeline, or if you follow hashtags.

@eddie

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@dmitri

While missing posts happen primarily if you visit the profile of someone from another server that you aren’t following: their profile will often be empty or missing posts.
