  • m2m,

    @chris I'm not sure if it's something that naturally comes as we age but I've been feeling the same for a while now. Not that I think too much of birthdays anyway...

    m2m,

    @machias maybe it's because I'm approaching my mid 50s, but I definitely get what you mean.

    @chris

    m2m,

    @machias @barrysampson @chris we should all meet in real life one day, and have a laugh, or an accidental fart while we walk, given how old we are 😂

    I didn't click (and don't expect you to) but I'm posting this so you'll understand why I want out of the species that would do this.

    m2m,

    @akamran psychopaths. They should belong to jail. The only 'positive' in this story is that they've been investigated by the police, and they're not CEOs of some multibillion company, like the other psychopaths are.

    One more point for me and my choice of switching away from Logic Pro a few years ago. I've never ever filed a bug report over any other software made by Apple.

    https://minutestomidnight.co.uk/blog/the-bug-reporting-process-with-apple-is-bogus/

    m2m,

    @geoffduncan oh, unfortunately I know that very well. I've been using Pages for many years. Been waiting for Thunderbird's full refresh for a while now, since Mail and Calendar (and of course Finder) are pretty much the only two core Apple applications I use on a daily basis.

    I only quoted Logic because it used to drive me nuts, and it's the only one for which I filed bug reports to the void.

    I feel like it's time to ditch #webmentions from my website. The ratio for spam to real mentions has taken a steep turn towards the former.

    This also offers a chance to wipe out any Javascript from the website, which is incredibly tempting.

    #indieweb

    m2m,

    @voxpelli webmention.io, and I wasn't getting much either, until a few weeks ago.

    m2m,

    @chris yes, until I realised I was using them to interact with people that I already interact with elsewhere (email, Mastodon). I very rarely received mentions from 'outside', and I would say, a substantial portion of people using webmentions are part of a specific dev circle.

    What about the 'other ones'? I have their email address, so I fail to see the point now. But I'm happy to leave the working structure intact, so that I can still send and receive mentions in certain cases.

    m2m,

    @chris I agree, and in fact I almost went all in with the indieweb implementation. I stop when I realised the tech barrier was basically involuntarily creating a walled garden of sort. Not that all walled gardens are intrinsically bad, but it's not my thing.

    I want to reach out to interesting people, outside of any corporate site, and there's email for that, there's always been.

    IMHO, signing an NDA (with fucking Meta no less - of all the despicable, disingenuous, dangerous companies), goes against the entire ethos of a project lie this.

    This whole thing was built by the people that use it, shaped by their values and beliefs, to be in their best interest. God knows it's a little rough around the edges. It's not perfect by any stretch, but it's ours.

    What possible reason is there to hide any development from these people unless it's not really in their best interest?

    m2m,

    @ilmai @zyk I reckon it's about rumours about the imminent debut of an ActivityPub-powered new platform by Meta.

    I don't use Chrome for the most part, aside from testing work things. I got a pop-up in Chrome that very clearly stated "Hey Chrome collects information from each site you visit and connects them to other sites you visit to enhance ad effectiveness." They give you some toggles to click to make you feel like you're stopping it.

    I guess at least they're being straightforward, kinda. Or something? Anyway I wouldn't really use Chrome if you've got a choice.

    m2m,

    @pseudoramble try ungoogled chrome, if it's just for testing it's perfect and doesn't call the mother ship

    m2m,

    @pseudoramble same here, Firefox for personal use and web dev. Actually, I've been testing sites with Safari, and Vivaldi as a Chromium-based tool. I still have Ungoogled Chromium but I seldom use it now.

    Just wiped out WebP images from my website.

    Why?

    It's not that I don't really feel the need anymore because I already have stellar performance benchmarks.

    It's not that with WebP I felt compelled to provide a fallback to support 4-year old browsers.

    It's because of the workflow. To gain an irrelevant 0.something in performance I was wasting my time exporting a Google-made image format that clogged my markup with convoluted <figure> and <picture> tags.

    Now it's just Markdown.

    #WebDesign

    m2m,

    @rawcodefarmer @cendyne @alcinnz Precisely :) I also added a custom plugin in Ruby so that I could remove the trailing slash at the end of the img tag. Even though it's optional, I dislike the result in the w3c validator, so I overrode Jekyll's Kramdown conversion.

    @LarsFosdal there is no pain because you are receding and a distant ship was on the horizon...

    Doing a test of custom Mastodon theme from @rolle for What do users on this server think?

    Only for users of this server, please LMK in this poll what you think:

    m2m,

    @rolle I've been using the PWA (with Vivaldi) on Android for a long while. Since I hate how small Mastodon looks on my phone, I managed to increased the zoom before creating my PWA. I have no idea if my current zoom is responsible for the fact that I'm only seeing 4 icons: Home / Search / Notifications / Lists

    I'd love if the theme was optional. I often customise websites through the Stylus extension, however, default Mastodon looks good to me (besides the font size).

    @adxlv @tchambers

    m2m,

    @tchambers @rolle @stux @adxlv

    genuine question: why the need for changing the UI? Which issue are we trying to solve with a different theme? I'm an advanced user, yet I find this theme not that usable, I keep missing the reply box when I try to respond to people, there are no borders, it breaks muscular memory. I recognise that I might be in the minority to have scrollbars visible at all times, but that emoji icon overlay gets hit every time I try to scroll the posting window.

    m2m,

    @rolle

    I'm not against your design per se, and I appreciate the open source ethos of the project. I just don't see the need. Granted, I don't have my own instance so it depends on my admin. I'm not entirely sure if a poll is the correct answer, but I see why it's been tested this way.

    I'm not protesting, I simply don't see the need to change something that's working to resemble something (Twitter) that never worked for me and many other that chose Mastodon.

    @tchambers @stux @adxlv

    m2m,

    @rolle

    I'm all up for choices :) In fact, I have customised CSS with Stylus on several websites that I use daily.

    However, I find usability issues with this theme way more than the default UI. Maybe it's habits, maybe not.

    Fact is, if there's a choice I'm up for it, however, if it's imposed, I'll swap instances.

    @tchambers @stux @adxlv

    m2m,

    @rolle

    the lack of border is a usability issue to me: I keep losing focus when I try to reply. I simply don't see the box. First and foremost, swapping the position of the sidebars is an issue per se, because it breaks habits. As I said, I don't use apps and the sticky vertical bar is perfectly usable to me, having to scroll horizontally is not.

    However, as I said, I have no problems with your initiative. The problem is with the fact that I'm currently stuck with it.
