@kbob@chaos.social

Crusty geek. Retired software developer, aspiring musician. Used Unix way before it was cool.

Once I built a pumpkin chucker. Another time, I built an LED cube.

Interests: 3D printing and making in general, synths (playing and making them), learning the bass guitar (rock, jazz, funk), FPGAs and electronics, pinball. I spent 40+ years obsessively coding and studying computing, but that interest has finally cooled.

@genesis At some point, it's our job to pick them up.

This week I helped my mom fill out the application to move into a home. I'm sadder about it than she is.

Because I'm unable to quit while I'm ahead, Squishy Dodecahedron is underway. This time I was smart enough to sew the zipper in before sewing the polyhedron's sides together. It's quite a bit smaller than Squishy Icosahedron, so I'm hoping that it won't be too hard to fit all 192 LEDs inside!

@geekmomprojects If it's not already too late, I respectfully request that you show us some detail shots of how you attach the light bezels to the fabric, and how you attach the LEDs to those.

Thanks.

@blakespot Yes, you did. More than once, maybe. (-:

Why is No Man's Sky on Mac so interesting? Were you on the development team?

I'm noticing my ranty political posts travel faster than my positive ones. Let's break that trend.

Boost this after you reply. Let's see if this can get as far as a politically charged post.

What is making you happy today?

kbob,
@kbob@chaos.social avatar

@dancinyogi I got to spend some time playing Dvořák and The Who today. Music I loved in decades past.

And I'm all for happy posts.

I want to get back into teaching #music. Especially #bassguitar. That's why I made a little thing. It's still in German only but will add an English version if people are interested 😸 #bass https://raichoosbassstudio.de/

@raichoo You're from Bielefeld? Isn't that the city that nobody knows anyone from?

I'm starting to suspect that Bielefeld really does exist after all. 😕

    @vowe I check Local and Federated timelines occasionally, just to see how much of a bubble my home timeline is in. It's usually about the same bubble as the rest of Mastodon.

    Last night, I drilled and tapped holes in the #ElectronicLeadScrew enclosure for mounting din rail, cable raceway, and the toolpost grinder power supply. But I want the screws to be flush with the back surface (because I'm going to mount it flush), so today I'm #3DPrinting custom spacers for the M3x5 screws so that they will fully engage with the threads I tapped in the enclosure, but not protrude out the back.

    I still haven't decided how to run the wires for the control box, encoder, and servo, so that's probably another four holes to cut, since they are very unlikely to be using the knockouts.

    Then I have to decide how to cut the holes for the fan and the air outlet. James Clough used an angle grinder. I'd rather not, but also I don't have a drill press, and the case is too tall to use the mill as a drill press for at least the bottom hole for the fan. I might get away with it for the outlet hole in the door though. 🤔

    @mcdanlj @smellsofbikes I don't know what your project is, but it looks like you're having fun.

    If you're concerned about jagged edges on that hole, there's another job for your 3D printer. Print a grommet the right size to cover the hole with smooth plastic (and hide the imperfect cut, if that's important to you).

    Since I've started using PrusaSlicer 2.6.α, supports are good enough and easy enough that I'm not really trying to avoid them in my designs. If anything, I'll try to keep them in hidden areas, as they usually leave visible artifacts.

    Even better than the organic supports is the automatic support painting. The slicer knows where supports are needed better than I do.

    Same object, other side. The overhang is less, so no supports are needed. I certainly wasn't going to calculate that!

    The part came out pretty clean. It took less than a minute to remove the supports. I rubbed most of them off with my thumb, and got a couple of them by rubbing with one jaw of a pliers. (A plier?)

    Here's the final piece. Our house came with an electric awning over the back porch. Since we're really good at losing remotes, I printed this holster that keeps the remote next to the light switches for the porch.

    Design files are here.

    @peturdainn Yes. The previous owners had a hook in that spot. When we painted the walls, the painters removed the hook. I thought this would look better and only take 10x longer to do.
