@eniko Count it as work towards making a Time Trial mode and finding a ballpark for the upper bounds :D.

Wait is that the reason I can't get back into the game industry? Because I can't be bribed with pizza and beer?

Right, ok, so in the year of our lord 2024, in Windows 10 (or 11 I guess), does anyone know

how the fuck you're supposed to type an emdash or a trademark symbol, without either using the emoji keyboard for a TM, or copy-pasting it in from elsewhere?

alt+ doesn't work anymore, it hasn't for years, aaaaaaaa (also I don't have 10key, who has the desk space for that anymore)

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@glassbottommeg I can still do left alt+0153 on the numpad for trademark ™ and 0151 for emdash —

i really like the concept of limit breaks from final fantasy but i hate how so often they're just like, "fill bar do special move"

i dont know how i would fix it but i feel like limit breaks should be reserved for specific story beats if you want them to be suitably impactful?

discuss

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko tabletop RPG Exalted uses Limit Break as a mechanic by name; only there it is filled up by you acting contrary to your nature and virtues (are you compassionate and trying to ignore suffering? Temperate but being offered luxury? Valorous but need to flee? Limit goes up...), and when it breaks your character becomes an unplayable wreck until it passes.

Given that the starting power level for characters that can Limit Break is Herculean, this is a dangerous, dangerous thing and often ends with truly epic amounts of collateral damage.

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko (Lancer also has Limit Break as a named mechanic for one of its mech frames; only there it is you literally breaking the limits of your machine to eek extra power to set all your ammunition on fire and extend its range at the cost of you opening the vents to your cold fusion reactor and taking double damage)

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko Sob Uncontrollably and Lash Out With The Power Of A God King is, as the tiktok generation says, a big mood.

I think the best implementation of this I've seen so far in video games though is CK3s stress mechanic which lets you ignore your personality traits at a cost of increasing stress, which eventually causes a break.

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko I think so. Barbarian Rage is already a very well explored mechanic that follows these kinds of ideas (getting extra damage at a cost of being uncontrollable), as does the idea that a Haymaker style attack that does huge amount of damage if it hits needs balancing by leaving its attacker open to massive damage afterwards. Choosing how extreme these effects are based on how much Limit is being burnt or managing it before it is automatically snapped for you could be a fun way to balance combat stances.

hmm. 10 unique bosses in kitsune tails once the remaining few are done. feel like that's actually a pretty decent number for a lil indie game

i mean. SMB3 arguably had like, 3

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko I want to play this game already Enikohhhhh ;_;

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko I hope Kitsune Tales makes you like a million dollars so you can pay everyone a lot of money, take some time off, and then hire another three developers for the next project cause you need to work less hours.

@glassbottommeg The white bits are cast in plaster, bought some molds from Hirst Arts, got some fancy dental stone that dries quick, hard, and light. Cast one of their molds twenty four times in total to get all of these (I have two of the molds so only had to do twelve batches, and got to watch a lot of Farscape or assemble minis while waiting for the molds to set)

The pink bits are the bits I'm cutting out and are indeed from large sheets of polystyrene. I'm using extruded polystyrene (XPS) for these as it's solid as heck. I went down to a local DIY store and bought two slabs of floor insulation; the kind of stuff you'd put under your floorboards, and have cut and carved up most of one of them with a cheap hot wire cutter. Should be able to grab some of this from your local Home Depot or equivalent.

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@glassbottommeg and then it's all glued together with Gorilla Glue. Drilled through some of the middle layers and stuck cocktail sticks or leftover miniature sprue pieces to ensure they stay connected a bit more definitely, and have sealed up some of the middle bits that didn't connect nicely with some decorative spackle.

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@glassbottommeg yepyepyep.

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@glassbottommeg This is the guide I'm using (and the provider of the silicone molds I'm using)

https://hirstarts.com/rockhex/rockhex.html

I'm putting them on the foam for much thicker middle layers for the game I'm planning to use them in

@aeva I'm back to making terrain pieces for tabletop games after a year or two of not feeling like I've had space to do it. Nice to be back to doing things with my hands again.

im so glad i have a little robot guy who lives in my house and who i can tell to vacuum the floors because the way things are right now those floors would absolutely not get vacuumed at all otherwise

EDIT: the robot is called mittens, btw

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko The problem I've always run into with robovacuums is that my living arrangements generally mean there's not space for a robot to get around the complex array of table-legs, chairs, projects, and wires. To be fair, this is also a problem for normal vacuum cleaners and I have to rearrange furniture to clean the apartment.

More of a "I live around too much things" error that I'm hoping corrects itself when I move out.

kaynSD,
@kaynSD@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko Plan for the next place (which I'll not be renting...) is to get a lot of floating shelves, wall mounted objects, and skirting rails for things that touch the floor, so that a vacuum can navigate them easier rather than having to awkwardly angle a broom to attack dustbunnies
